Sang-Moon Bae carded a 5-under 66 to take the clubhouse lead after the morning wave of play Friday at the Northern Trust Open.

And when darkness halted play with just a few groups left on the course, Bae's lead was still safe at 9 under, one shot better than Robert Garrigus and Aaron Baddeley.

Dustin Johnson, Jim Furyk, Keegan Bradley, Jordan Spieth and Jimmy Walker, a three-time winner already this season, are all within five shots of the lead, too.

Here's how it all unfolded during Friday's second round at Riviera:

Update No. 30: 8:59 p.m. EST

For the second straight day, darkness suspends the round. Round 2 will be completed at 7:30 a.m. local time.

Update No. 29: 8:51 p.m. EST

The projected cut moves back to 1 over as the last few groups race to beat darkness. One player who will definitely miss the cut is Matt Kuchar (7 over). Kuchar's PGA Tour-leading active streak of 30 straight cuts made will end this week, meaning Adam Scott will now be the active leader at 28.

Update No. 28: 8:32 p.m. EST

Hunter Mahan carded a 2-over 73 today to drop to 1 over for the tournament. He's now projected to miss the cut as 70 players are at even par or better right now. Graham DeLaet is also one of the players at 1 over.

Update No. 27: 7:57 p.m. EST

Jim Furyk and Dustin Johnson both close with par at the 18th to end the second round at 6 under. Furyk shot 3 under today while Johnson was 1 under.

Update No. 26: 7:31 p.m. EST

Hunter Mahan saves par from 10 feet at the par-5 17th to remain at 1 over, which is the projected cut right now. Sixty-nine players, though, are even par, so the cut could move back to even.

Update No. 25: 7:07 p.m. EST

William McGirt birdies his final hole of the day, the ninth, to cap a 4-under 67 and enter the weekend at 6 under. Also closing with birdie is Robert Garrigus, whose birdie at the 18th moved him back to 8 under. Garrigus also carded a 67 today.

Some big names at even par right now, including Webb Simpson, Jason Dufner, Ian Poulter and Hunter Mahan. Simpson and Dufner are finished with their second rounds.

Update No. 23: 6:56 p.m. EST

Make that two straight bogeys for Robert Garrigus, who misses a short par putt at the 17th to drop back to 7 under. Also, Justin Rose had it to 3 under at one point today, but a a triple-bogey 7 at the 12th and a bogey at the 13th have dropped him to 1 over. He's on the projected cut line right now.

Robert Garrigus bogeys the 16th to fall back to 8 under while Dustin Johnson is now back to 7 under after a birdie at the 13th.

Robert Garrigus' birdie at the par-4 third moves him into a share of the lead with Sang-Moon Bae at 9 under. Garrigus is searching for his second PGA Tour victory – his first came at the 2010 Children's Miracle Network Classic.

Justin Rose seems to be doing just fine in his first start returning from a right shoulder injury (Click here to read more about Rose and the injury). He's 1 under through nine holes today after a 1-under 70 on Thursday. He has just two bogeys in his first 27 holes and is 2 under overall.

We've already told you about Rickie Fowler's 5-over 76 today that likely knocked him out of the weekend. With the projected cut at even par right now, here are some other early rounds today that will probably produce missed cuts:

  • Marc Leishman, 3-over 74 (1 over overall)
  • Ryan Moore, 5-over 76 (3 over overall)
  • Ricky Barnes, 4-over 75 (3 over overall)
  • James Driscoll and Jason Kokrak, 6-over 77 (4 over overall)

Robert Garrigus makes the turn at 4 under today. He started on the back nine and after two birdies and an eagle, he's tied for second at 8 under entering the front nine.

Update No. 15: 4:29 p.m. EST

Dustin Johnson started his second round with two straight birdies, but a bogey at the fourth hole has dropped him back to 6 under.

Aaron Baddeley closes with four straight birdies, and five birdie in his last six holes, to finish with a 6-under 65. He's solo second at 8 under right now.

Two straight bogeys, at Nos. 15 and 16, have derailed Jason Allred's chances at 59. He's now 7 under through 16 holes today.

Jason Allred has six birdies in his last seven holes and nine total as he's 9 under through his first 14 holes today. Overall, Allred is 7 under, two shots off the lead.

Rickie Fowler's struggles continue. After an opening-round 68, Fowler shot 5-over 76 today to fall back to 2 over for the tournament. He will now likely miss his third straight cut.

Sang-Moon Bae birdies the 17th and pars the 18th to wrap up a 5-under 66. At 9 under, he's three shots clear of the field as the morning groups begin to finish their rounds.

Sang-Moon Bae's birdie at the par-3 16th is his fourth birdie of the day, and with two holes left today, Bae leads at 8 under.

A bogey at the 12th by Charlie Beljan drops him back into a share of first with Sang-Moon Bae at 7 under. Also dropping back is Jimmy Walker, who has two straight bogeys, at Nos. 4 and 5, to fall to 4 under.

Charlie Beljan birdies the par-5 11th to move to 8 under. He now leads by a shot over Sang-Moon Bae. Beljan has missed five cuts in eight starts this season, but he does have one top 10 (T-9, Humana Challenge).

Jimmy Walker is now 6 under, 2 under through 12 holes today, but he still trails as both Sang-Moon Bae and Charlie Beljan have moved to 7 under.

Johnson's putting leads him to the top at Riviera

While the stat sheet showed 30 putts from Dustin Johnson in the first round at the Northern Trust Open, the more important statistic was his strokes-gained putting – which isn't as complicated as it sounds.

Darren Clarke was disappointed with his 7-over 78 in Thursday’s first round of the Northern Trust Open. But he was more disappointed with the fact that he had to withdraw due to a continuing muscle issue in his chest.

Through 11 holes today, Jordan Spieth has two birdies and no bogeys. He's moved back to under par for the tournament, too, at 1 under.

Jimmy Walker and Keegan Bradley each birdie the par-5 first, their 10th hole, to move to 5 under and 4 under, respectively. The leaders, Sang-Moon Bae and Charlie Beljan, are 6 under.

Jimmy Walker is tied for fifth right now at 4 under. Walker, who has won three times already this season, is even through seven holes today.

At one time during the morning wave, 15 players were tied for the lead. But Dustin Johnson, with just one bogey on his card, posted a 5-under 66 and took a lead that held up until play was suspended because of darkness. Ten players finished one shot back at 4-under-par, including three-time 2013-14 winner Jimmy Walker, with J.B. Holmes on that mark through 16 holes when play was put on hold until 7:30 a.m. local time Friday.

Tour Tracker: D. Johnson on top as play halts

World No. 5 Justin Rose makes his return from a shoulder injury at this week's Northern Trust Open, in a stocked field that also includes Jason Dufner, Matt Kuchar and three-time 2013-14 winner Jimmy Walker. Dustin Johnson, meanwhile, jumped out to the lead with a 66 in the morning groups.

J. Spieth's caddie flashes back to amateur days

Yesterday, caddie Michael Greller flashed back to the 2012 Northern Trust Open when he took a week off from his job as a sixth-grade math and science teacher in Washington to watch Jordan Spieth compete as an amateur.

S. Verplank WDs at Riviera, citing back injury

Scott Verplank made a quadruple-bogey "snowman" eight, two doubles and a bogey and was 10-over-par when he withdrew from the Northern Trust Open on the ninth hole of the first round, citing a bad back.

Some Tour events keep public from practice rounds

Will fans be part of Tuesday practice rounds on the PGA Tour in the future? At the recent Farmers Insurance Open and this week's Northern Trust Open, spectators have been banned from the grounds on Tuesdays. The move is an outgrowth of the revised security policies issued late last year by the Tour.

J. Rose returns to action at Riviera

Reigning U.S. Open champion Justin Rose had been sidelined for the past two months with what Rose described as a basic tendinitis of the right supraspinatus (shoulder). “I played pretty much from October last year with it not perfect,” Rose said.
