'Bama, Arkansas highlight Lady Puerto Rico field

Two SEC schools – Arkansas and Alabama – are the top team’s heading into the Lady Puerto Rico Classic at Rio Mar Country Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, on Feb. 16.

Arkansas, No. 9 in the Golfweek/Sagarain College Rankings, is playing in its first tournament of the spring season. The Razorbacks are looking for its second win of the season after winning the Mercedes Benz Collegiate Classic in September. The team’s big-name players are senior Emily Tubert and sophomores Gabriela Lopez and Regina Plasencia. Plasencia is No. 25 in the rankings and hold a 290-34-12 record against players in the top-100.

For the Crimson Tide, the team struggled in the early part of the fall and then pulled it together to win at the Landfall Tradition. Senior Stephanie Meadow is No. 2 in the rankings who recorded three top-five finishes in four starts including a win at the Landfall Tradition.

Alabama is looking to capture the Lady Puerto Rico Classic title for the fourth time in five years (the team didn’t play the tournament during the 2011-12 season).

Other top-50 teams in the field from the Golfweek rankings include No. 18 Iowa State, No. 19 Northwestern, No. 21 North Carolina State, No. 29 Auburn, No. 31 Kent State, No. 44 TCU and No. 49 GRU Augusta.
