Cal looks for 4th straight at Burns Intercollegiate
When Joel Stalter and the California Golden Bears swept titles at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate last year, it was a momentous occasion. The win was the sixth of the season for Cal as the Bears went on to set an NCAA record for wins.
One year later, California is not making a bid for six wins, but it's still the favorite to win on the Garden Island (Kauai). The team will be playing for its fourth straight win at the tournament.
The Golden Bears headline a strong field at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate, which is set to take place at the Wailua Golf Course in Lihue, Hawaii, Wednesday through Friday.
The 16-team field will play 54 holes over three days at the par-72, 6,991-yard course. Eight teams that will tee it up Wednesday are listed in the top 100 of the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings.
The field includes Arizona, BYU (No. 37), California (No. 2), Colorado State, Fresno State, Hawaii, Hawaii-Hilo, Long Beach State, Nevada, New Mexico (No. 15), Pacific, St. Mary's (Calif.), Texas A&M (No. 7), Texas-El Paso, UNLV (No. 27) and Washington State.
Six teams in the field competed at the Arizona Intercollegiate earlier this year, with California, Arizona and New Mexico finishing one, two and three, respectively.
