With the spring season well underway, the Haskins Award Watch List is being shaken up this week – in a big way.

Last week, Patrick Rodgers moved up to No. 4 on the Watch List after gathering a victory at The Prestige at PGA West. This week, most top teams were back in action, which included top-ranked Alabama and the then No. 1 player in the Golfweek Rankings, Trey Mullinax. Although, top-10s are appreciated, wins are probably the most important factor when deciding the Haskins Award winner. Mullinax didn’t gather his second win this season at the Puerto Rico Classic, therefore that allowed others to push their way to the top.

The Haskins Award, presented by Stifel, is given out annually to the best college player voted on by the players, coaches and media.

Here is Golfweek’s third spring edition of the Haskins Award Watch List, which takes a look at some favorites and notables heading into the bulk of the spring season. If a player is not on the list, he can most certainly play his way onto the list during the spring season.

• • •

1. Patrick Rodgers, Stanford junior

Hometown: Avon, Ind.

Golfweek/Sagarin College Ranking: 13

Golfstat Cup: 14

Events: 6

Wins: Erin Hills Intercollegiate, The Prestige at PGA West

Top-10s: 4

Top-5s: 2

Worst finish: T-21, OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational

Last finish: Won, The Prestige at PGA West

The skinny: It was said that Rodgers needed more wins to be in the mix for POY honors. What does he do? He wins The Prestige at PGA West last week. With other big names not making moves, this allowed Rodgers and his consistent game to move up to No. 1.

• • •

2. Ollie Schniederjans, Georgia Tech junior

photo

Hometown: Powder Springs, Ga.

Golfweek/Sagarin College Ranking: 10

Golfstat Cup: 8

Events: 7

Wins: T-1, Carpet Capital Collegiate, U.S. Collegiate

Top-10s: 5

Top-5s: 4

Worst finish: T-30, The Amer Ari Invitational

Last finish: T-10, Puerto Rico Classic

The skinny: His game seems to be back where it was this fall – arguably being the best player and at the top of his game – as Schniederjans gathered another top 10 at the Puerto Rico Classic.

• • •

3. Brandon Hagy, California senior

photo

Hometown: Westlake Village, Calif.

Golfweek/Sagarin College Ranking: 3

Golfstat Cup: 5

Events: 7

Wins: Jack Nicklaus Invitational; T-1, Arizona Intercollegiate

Top-10s: 6

Top-5s: 5

Worst finish: T-14, John Burns Intercollegiate

Last finish: T-14, John Burns Intercollegiate

The skinny: Hagy had his first hiccup of the season after finishing outside the top 10 for the first time in seven starts this season (if you can really call that a hiccup). A true test for this player will be at next week’s Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters to see where his game stacks up with the best.

• • •

4. Robby Shelton, Alabama freshman

photo

Hometown: Wilmer, Ala.

Golfweek/Sagarin College Ranking: 5

Golfstat Cup: 24

Events: 5

Wins: T-1, Olympia Fields/Illini Invitational; T-1, Puerto Rico Classic

Top-10s: 3

Top-5s: 2

Worst finish: 14th, Gifford Collegiate

Last finish: T-1, Puerto Rico Classic

The skinny: The freshman has two victories thus far in five events for the Crimson Tide. He has a consistent game, which has allowed him to crack the lineup in each of Alabama’s starts this season, and likely has a permanent spot moving forward. Like Hagy, it will be interesting to see how Shelton competes with the top players in the country at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters.

• • •

5. Trey Mullinax, Alabama senior

photo

Hometown: Birmingham, Ala.

Golfweek/Sagarin College Ranking: 1

Golfstat Cup: 2

Events: 5

Wins: Isleworth Collegiate Invitational

Top-10s: 5

Top-5s: 2

Worst finish: T-8, Puerto Rico Classic

Last finish: T-8, Puerto Rico Classic

The skinny: Mullinax stayed at the top of the Watch List the last two weeks, but his brilliant win at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational can only hold up so long. His top-10s are impressive, no doubt, but more wins are necessary to garner this award.

• • •

6. Ben Crancer, Texas A+M sophomore

photo

Hometown: Kirkwood, Mo.

Golfweek/Sagarin College Ranking: 7

Golfstat Cup: 15

Events: 6

Wins: Dick’s Challenge Cup

Top-10s: 4

Top-5s: 2

Worst finish: T-23, U.S. Collegiate Championship

Last finish: T-14, John Burns Intercollegiate

The skinny: It’s a shame the John Burns Intercollegiate was shortened to 36 holes because who knows if Crancer could have moved into the top 10. One or two more wins and a better record against the top-50 in the Golfweek Rankings (13-24-3) will boost his status for POY.

• • •

7. Gavin Green, New Mexico junior

photo

Hometown: Malaysia

Golfweek/Sagarin College Ranking: 28

Golfstat Cup: 40

Events: 8

Wins: T-1, William H. Tucker Championship; Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic

Top-10s: 4

Top-5s: 3

Worst finish: T-31, John Burns Intercolleigate

Last finish: T-31, John Burns Intercolleigate

The skinny: Green had his worst two finishes in the first two starts of the spring. He still has played the most events out of everyone on the list and is without a doubt still the unquestioned leader on the course for the Lobos. Let’s see if he can regain his form from the fall in the weeks to come.

• • •

8. Scott Vincent, Virginia Tech junior

photo

Hometown: Zimbabwe

Golfweek/Sagarin College Ranking: 18

Golfstat Cup: 6

Events: 5

Wins: T-1 Golfweek Conference Challenge, VCU Shootout, Bank of Tennessee Collegiate

Top-10s: 4

Top-5s: 4

Worst finish: T-36, UNCG Bridgestone Collegiate

Last finish: T-16, Puerto Rico Classic

The skinny: Vincent had a good showing (T-16) at the Puerto Rico Classic in a good field. His strength of schedule is 422nd, but will still need more wins to gather player of the year honors.

• • •

9. Joey Garber, Georgia senior

photo

Hometown: Petoskey, Mich.

Golfweek/Sagarin College Ranking: 2

Golfstat Cup: 3

Events: 5

Wins: Invitational at Ocean Course

Top-10s: 4

Top-5s: 4

Worst finish: T-19, Brickyard Collegiate Championship

Last finish: T-3, Puerto Rico Classic

The skinny: A strong spring start for the senior at the Puerto Rico Classic leading the Bulldogs to a third-place finish. Garber holds a 69.0 stroke average over the final two rounds of his last five college golf tournaments.

• • •

10. Greg Eason, Central Florida, senior

photo

Hometown: England

Golfweek/Sagarin College Ranking: 25

Golfstat Cup: 41

Events: 6

Wins: John Hayt Collegiate Invitational

Top-10s: 5

Top-5s: 4

Worst finish: T-18, Shoal Creek Intercollegiate

Last finish: Won, John Hayt Collegiate Invitational

The skinny: Eason needed a win to stay on the list this week, and he did so at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational. For the 241nd-ranked strength of schedule, he has a 343-41-5 overall record.
