Accenture’s exit leaves WGC Match Play in limbo

The World Golf Championships series could be seeking a new sponsor for its WGC-Accenture Match Play, which is set to lose its title sponsor after the 2014 tournament (Camilo Villegas shown here in 2011).

The WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship will be without a sponsor after next month’s event and might be on the move.

Accenture, a global management-consulting company, has sponsored the event since its 1999 inception. The company has told the Tour that the Feb. 19-23 event at Marana, Ariz., would be its last.

The future of the Match Play, which ends the West Coast swing, could include a later date and move from the desert, according to sources involved in the negotiations. It all depends on the sponsor.

Adam Scott, the reigning Masters champion and No. 2 player in the world, won’t be playing this year’s Match Play, saying The Golf Club at Dove Mountain doesn’t fit his eye. His interest in the tournament could change with a new site.

“Absolutely,” Scott said. “No doubt.”
