GB&I streamlines selection process for Curtis Cup

The controversy surrounding the dramatic reversal on Charley Hull's selection to the 2012 GB&I Curtis Cup team lead to the new rules being unveiled for the selection process.

The Ladies Golf Union has altered selection of the Great Britain and Ireland Curtis Cup team that should help overcome the shambles that involved Charley Hull in 2012.

This year’s team will be comprised of four players off the World Amateur Golf Rankings, two from the LGU Order of Merit with the remaining two selected by the traditional method of a selection panel.

The top four GB&I players on the WAGR table after the Welsh Open Stroke Play Championship that ends May 4, and the two top players not already selected via the WAGR table will automatically make the team. Selectors from the four home unions of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland will determine the remaining two team members. The GB&I team will be announced on May 6.

“This new selection process introduces a greater level of clarity and fairness and will be welcomed by the players,” said GB&I captain Tegwen Matthews. “They’ll know what they have to do to play their way onto the Curtis Cup team.”

Two years ago, prospective team members had to attend a training session at Curtis Cup venue Nairn Golf Club in Scotland in order to make the side. Hull skipped the session to play in the Kraft Nabisco Championship and was told she wouldn’t play in the match. However, the LGU made a dramatic, highly embarrassing reversal at the 11th hour and selected Hull anyway.

“Increasingly, the top players are competing around the world rather than just in Great Britain & Ireland, so it is more difficult for selectors to watch them in action,” said LGU Chairman Trish Wilson. “In addition, the players themselves have been asking for more information on how they can position themselves for consideration for a Curtis Cup place.”

The GB&I side will travel to St Louis Country Club June 6-8 hoping to defend the trophy they won two years ago at Nairn.
