Sam Horsfield, the reigning Florida State Amateur champion, opened the new year with another big amateur victory. Horsfield, 17, of Davenport, Fla., won the New Year’s Invitational at St. Petersburg Country Club by four strokes Sunday, joining Brandt Snedeker (2004) and J.B. Holmes (2003) among the list of winners.

Horsfield shot 2-under 70 in the final round for a 13-under 275 total. He had pulled in front of the 88th NYI with a second-round 65, the low round of the tournament, at the 6,909-yard course.

Horsfield, the No. 5 player in the Golfweek/Sagarin junior boys rankings, fended off a host of players with collegiate experience to secure the title. Purdue freshman Philippe Schweizer (73) finished runner-up at 9-under 279, followed by North Carolina alumnus Michael McGowan (72–282). Purdue senior Adam Schenk (72–283) placed fourth.

Joe Alfieri, the defending mid-amateur champion, shot consecutive 69s in the middle rounds en route to a 286 total and two-stroke victory in the 25-and-older division. Alfieri tied for ninth overall at 2-under 286.

Tom Hyland, the reigning senior-division champion, pulled out a one-stroke victory despite struggling to a final-round 79. He had built a five-shot cushion in his division by opening with rounds of 72 and 71.
