2nd straight 64 gives Langer win in Hawaii
Sunday, January 19, 2014
With birdies on five holes down the stretch, Bernhard Langer built a lead over Fred Couples and shot his second 64 in as many days to win by three shots in the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai in Kaupulehu-Kona, Hawaii.
Starting the day 14 under and tied with Couples, Langer fell behind Jeff Sluman – who in his 80th straight Champions Tour start started the day two back but moved to 17 under on the strength of five front-nine birdies.
Sluman moved to 18 under, but was caught by Langer and Couples when they birdied the 13th.
Langer went on to birdie the next and take the lead solo – and made three more birdies down the stretch. His 64 outpaced Sluman's 65 and Couples' 67.
"It's a new year and my goal was to get over the hurdle and win as soon as possible," said Langer, who earned his 19th Champions Tour win. "I'm very pleased and extremely blessed to play golf like this. To be 22 under doesn't happen very often."
