Senior Open to Sunningdale in '15, Carnoustie in '16
Monday, January 20, 2014
Sunningdale Golf Club and Carnoustie Golf Links will host the 2015 and 2016 Senior Open championships, respectively, the R&A announced Monday.
It will be the second time that the Old Course at Sunningdale, located outside of London, has hosted the event. In 2009, Loren Roberts defeated Fred Funk and Ireland’s Mark McNulty in a playoff.
Carnoustie, located in Angus, Scotland, and a fixture on the Open Championship rota, has hosted seven Open Championships, the 2011 Women’s British Open and the 2010 Senior British Open, won by Bernhard Langer.
“After a hugely successful Senior Open at Royal Birkdale we are very much looking forward to taking the Championship to two outstanding venues in Sunningdale in 2015 and Carnoustie in 2016,” said Johnnie Cole-Hamilton, the R&A's executive director of championships. “Both are iconic courses and have successfully staged The Senior Open Championship once before, so the players will look forward to returning to them.”
The dates for the 2015 championship at Sunningdale are July 23-26, marking the eighth staging of the event on English soil. The 2016 championship will take place July 21-24 at Carnoustie. It will be the first time since the 2012 tournament at Turnberry that the event will be played in Scotland.
