Cabrera-Bello leads by 2 shots at Qatar Masters
Thursday, January 23, 2014
Rafa Cabrera-Bello birdied four of his final five holes en route to a 7-under 65 Thursday in the second round of the Qatar Masters.
At 13 under, Cabrera-Bello leads by two shots over second-place George Coetzee, who fired a second-round 69 at Doha (Qatar) Golf Club.
Cabrera-Bello finished second three years ago at this event and was fourth last week in Abu Dhabi. The Spaniard is searching for his third European Tour victory.
"I got on a very hot streak on my back nine with the putter, so that was very good," Cabrera-Bello said. "Playing here in the Middle East definitely feels like back home in Gran Canaria as the golf courses have plenty of waste sand around and also plenty of rocks like here in Qatar. There is always a bit of a breeze, like the sea breeze we get back home, and then there are palm trees, and I like having sun shining on the golf course."
John Carlsson, Matthew Baldwin and Steve Webster are tied for third at 10 under. John Daly is tied for 10th at 8 under.
"I play to win and I feel I am still very competitive, and barring some injuries the last six years who knows what would have happened," Daly said. "I feel pretty good right now. . . . I still feel like I can still win."
Daly is the highest American on the leaderboard. Peter Uihlein is 5 under, Brooks Koepka is 4 under and Jason Dufner is 3 under. Americans John Hahn (6 over) and Connor Arendell (9 over) missed the cut.
