Tiger Woods' first round of 2014 was a bit of a struggle.

Woods missed fairways and greens, and struggled with his speed on the greens as he shot an even-par 72 Thursday on a South course at Torrey Pines that was nearly four shots tougher than the North course. He's eight shots back of Stewart Cink, who leads the Farmers Insurance Open after an 8-under 64 on the North course.

Phil Mickelson also logged his first PGA Tour round of 2014. Lefty shot 69 on the North course despite battling tightness in his back.

Here's how it all unfolded Thursday at Torrey Pines:

Around the green: Tiger's chip from short of the green rolls just by the right side of the cup and settles a few past past.

On the green: And the par save is good.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even through 10 holes

• • •

Hole No. 9: Par 5, 614 yards

Off the tee: Tiger sends this tee ball way right with driver. He dropped the club on the follow-through.

Second shot: Tiger is right of the trees, but has a decent lie despite the ball resting on mostly dirt. He'll hit 3-wood and hits the ball into the left intermediate cut. Not bad.

Third shot: The third shot goes about 15 feet too far, but Woods is still putting for birdie.

On the green: Tiger leaves this birdie roll well short, but ends up making the 3-footer for par.

• • •

Hole No. 6: Par 5, 560 yards

Second shot: Tiger goes for the green in two with a 3-iron and he blocks it out to the right. The ball finds some thick rough, too.

Third shot: Tiger's third shot from the rough ends up about 15 feet past the hole. That was about as good as he could've done with a front hole location and a big slope leading up to the front of the green.

On the green: Tiger misses left with birdie, and ends up with a disappointing par.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even through 6 holes

Elsewhere on the course: Jason Day birdies the par-5 first hole at the North course after being well short of the green in two shots. Phil Mickelson also birdies the hole to move to 2 under. . . . Tim Herron is now the solo leader at 4 under.

Approach shot: Tiger's approach misses right of the green and finds the sand.

Around the green: From the greenside bunker, Tiger lands the ball on the fringe and leaves it well short. Didn't have a lot of green to work with, but he's definitely disappointed with that one.

On the green: Tiger misses low and left with his par putt, and he settles for bogey.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even through 5 holes

Elsewhere on the course: Erik Compton, the former University of Georgia player who is also a two-time heart transplant recipient, is the solo leader at 4 under through 10 holes on the North course, which is the easier of the two courses.

• • •

• • •

• • •

Elsewhere on the course: Phil Mickelson has made par on his first six holes after starting on the back nine on the North course.

• • •

Off the tee: Tiger is playing the South course today at Torrey Pines, and on the opening hole he pulls out the driver and misses right with his tee ball. He found a fairway bunker on that drive.

Approach shot: Tiger's approach from the sand finds the back part of the green. The pin is on the front, so he'll have a long birdie putt coming up.

On the green: The long birdie putt doesn't fall, but Tiger makes the par save.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even through 1 hole

Elsewhere on the course: Stewart Cink and Mark Calcavecchia currently share the lead at 3 under.
