Stricker has wife on bag at Greenbrier, could play British
WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. – Steve Stricker is making just his seventh start in 2014 and will be doing so with a familiar face on the bag – his wife Nicki.
Nicki Stricker carried the bag full time for four years early in her husband’s career (1994-97) and then again for a final year-long run in 2001.
“We try to do it once a year,” Stricker said.
This week was a good one for his wife to get the call. Stricker’s normal caddy Jimmy Johnson had committed to looping for Chris Kirk this week after Stricker decided late to play the Greenbrier Classic. Nicki had carried the bag two years ago at the Greenbrier nd as Stricker said, “This is a great family spot.”
Stricker plans to play the John Deere Classic, but also said he is leaning toward not playing in the Open Championship in two weeks. The only reason he might decide to play is if he feels he is playing well, earns several Ryder Cup points and decides to chase more.
Stricker is currently 40th on the Ryder Cup point list, which is now based on earnings. The winner’s share is $1,170,000 this week, so Stricker could climb inside the top 20 with a win, and be persuaded to play the British Open in two weeks.
