Titleist releases Vokey SM5 wedges in indigo
Wednesday, July 16, 2014
Bob Vokey, Titleist's master craftsman and wedge guru, celebrated his 75th birthday Tuesday, and fans of his creations were given a present with the release of the new Vokey Design Spin Milled 5 (SM5) Indigo wedges.
Available for a limited time starting today, these are the same SM5 wedges that were released at PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, Fla., in January, but the Indigo models have been plated and treated with a special PVD finish to create an iridescent blue look. They won't rust, but according to Titleist the blue finish will wear off over time in in the hitting area and where the sole scraps against sand.
Titleist said the SM5 wedges are the most-played model on the PGA Tour and are used by Adam Scott, Jordan Spieth and Webb Simpson.
The most significant update the Spin Milled wedges received this year was the new, deeper TX3 groove pattern. According to Vokey, the grooves in the SM5 wedges are 7 percent larger than the grooves in the SM4 wedges. This helps them channel away water and debris more effectively, so the SM5s should generate more spin from the rough.
The limited-edition Indigo wedges cost $185 and are available in lofts ranging from 54 degrees to 60 degrees. They are available in M and S grinds at select retailors and at vokey.com.
