LPGA to open 2015 season in Florida

Golden Ocala in north-central Florida is set to host the LPGA's 2015 season opener.

The LPGA will open its 2015 season at Golden Ocala Golf & Equestrian Club, according to a letter posted on the Ocala, Fla., club’s website. Coates Golf, a club manufacturer in nearby Silver Springs, will title-sponsor the event, said Joe Donnelly, Golden Ocala’s general manager, in the letter to members.

LPGA spokesman Kraig Kann would not comment, but players were informed via email July 28. The LPGA issued a news release July 29 confirming the Ocala event.

The Coates Golf Championship will be played Jan. 28-31, ending on a Saturday so as not to run up against the Super Bowl on Sunday, Feb. 1.

“It’s awesome to get another event added on the schedule, and then to be in Florida, it’s like a dream-come-true,” Brittany Lincicome, a Seminole resident, said via a text message. “It will be great to have all my family come and watch me play that week.”

Because of the shorter winter days and the possibility of frost, the field will be limited to 108 players, according to the letter, which since has been removed from the club’s website.

The LPGA also said that the 2013 season-opener, the Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic, will be played Feb. 5-8 at Ocean Club Course at Atlantis on Paradise Island, Bahamas. In 2013, after opening in the Bahamas, the LPGA traveled to Australia and Asia for three weeks and before beginning its domestic schedule on the West Coast.

The complete LPGA schedule is not expected to be released until late in the year.
