Monday, June 2, 2014
Maverick McNealy just finished up his freshman season at Stanford. Now, he's tied for the lead with Alex Cejka after the first round of the 36-hole U.S. Open sectional qualifier in Daly City, Calif.
McNealy, who twice made match play at the U.S. Junior Amateur, made just one bogey, at the par-5 18th, and added four birdies and an eagle to shoot 5-under 67 at Lake Merced Golf Club. Last week, he helped Stanford to a semifinals appearance at the NCAA Championship.
Cejka, who has made three cuts on the PGA Tour this season, was bogey-free at Lake Merced, making four of his five birdies on the back nine. The German has spent most of his time this season on the Web.com Tour, where he's notched a victory and a runner-up finish in seven starts.
Brian Campbell, a rising senior at Illinois, is tied for third at 4 under with Derek Tolan and Geoff Gonzalez. Campbell's round came at the Olympic Club's Ocean Course, the other course being used for the qualifier.
Other notable first rounds:
- Sam Saunders: The Arizona State junior fired a 2-under 69 at Olympic Club.
- Corey Pereira: The Washington freshman shot 71 at Lake Merced.
- Joel Stalter: The recent Cal grad went for 70 at Olympic Club.
