Brian Stuard of Jackson, Mich., fired a first-round, bogey-free 6-under 64 at Springfield Country Club to take a two-shot lead into the clubhouse at the Springfield, Ohio, U.S. Open Sectional Qualifier.

Stuard, who missed his last three previous cuts on the PGA Tour, shot his low round of the season at the par-70 Donald Ross-designed course. His best finish in this wrap-around season was during the OHL Classic at Mayakoba, where he finished in solo second. Stuard also has three other top-10 finishes on the season.

Cincinnati Bearcats assistant coach Andrew Stephens, Chris Thompson and Rob Moss are tied for second at 4 under.

Stephens, who played his collegiate golf at Kentucky, went 4 under on his last nine holes to get into the clubhouse at 4 under.

In third, one-shot back is Ohio State product Logan Jones. Jones shot a bogey-free 3-under 67.

Other notables at 1 under par are Will Grimmer, who shot 59 in the 2013 North and South Junior and an Ohio state commit, Web.com Tour player Blayne Barber and long-time professional Billy Mayfair.

This is Springfield’s sixth sectional qualifier in the last seven years.

The 63 players are playing for three spots in the U.S. Open, which is set to take place at Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina on June 12-15.
