2012 PGA PNC champ Dobyns WDs; personal reasons
Tuesday, June 24, 2014
Citing "personal reasons," 2012 champion Matt Dobyns withdrew Tuesday morning from the 47th PGA Professional National Championship in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Later on Tuesday, Laurie Dobyns gave birth to a 2-pound, 8-ounce boy that wasn't due until September. It is the second child for the Dobyns family.
Dobyns shot a 1-over-par 73 at each of the two courses used for the opening 36 holes, Dunes Golf and Beach Club, and the Resort Club at Grande Dunes, to enter Tuesday's third round in a tie for 31st place. Dobyns, the head professional at Fresh Meadow Country Club in Lake Success, N.Y., won the PGA PNC two years ago by eight strokes, breaking Sam Snead's record for largest margin of victory.
He qualified for this year's U.S. Open at Pinehurst, N.C., and missed the 36-hole cut by one stroke after making a bogey at his last hole, the par-3 ninth.
