After missing more than three months of play because of a back injury, Tiger Woods returned to the PGA Tour this morning to shoot 3-over 74 in the first round of the Quicken Loans National.

Two days after saying he doesn't feel "explosive" yet, Woods got off to a slow start. He was 6 over through 12 holes, but made three birdies coming in and is eight shots off of Greg Chalmers leads after Round 1.

TIGER TRACKER

• • •

Hole #9: Par 5, 636 yards

Last hole of the day for Tiger, who has recovered nicely and has a shot at 72 if he were to make eagle here at this long par 5.

• OFF THE TEE: Fore! Second time Tiger's said that today. This time, his drive misses right.

• SECOND SHOT: Some good luck for Tiger as it's not as far right as he thinks. He instead finds the right fairway bunker. He'll lay up into the fairway.

• THIRD SHOT: Wedge to about 35 feet. Not Tiger's best.

• ON THE GREEN: Tiger can't get the long birdie putt to drop, but he makes the 3-footer for par. Nice way to battle back for a 3-over 74.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 3 over

• • •

Hole #8: Par 4, 354 yards

Tiger has turned things around with two birdies in his last four holes.

• OFF THE TEE: Woods finds the fairway at the shortest par 4 on the course.

• OFF THE TEE: Great tee ball here as Tiger sticks it to about 5 feet.

• ON THE GREEN: Tiger's birdie putt is about 3 feet long and he converts.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 4 over

• • •

Hole #6: Par 5, 555 yards

Tiger remains at 5 over, which has him nine shots off the lead held by Ricky Barnes and Patrick Reed.

• OFF THE TEE: Tiger's drive misses a little right. With water in front of the right part of the green, going for it in two will probably not be an option.

• SECOND SHOT: Tiger lays up into the fairway.

• THIRD SHOT: Tiger finds the middle of the green, but will have about 50 feet left for birdie.

• ON THE GREEN: Two-putt par for Woods.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 5 over

• • •

Hole #5: Par 4, 413 yards

That was a much-needed birdie for Tiger, who could still string some birdies together for a respectable score.

• OFF THE TEE: It's clicking off the tee now for Tiger, who again puts his tee ball in the fairway.

• APPROACH SHOT: Wood's approach shot is short of the green.

• AROUND THE GREEN: Tiger putts this one from off the front of the green and puts it inside of 5 feet.

• ON THE GREEN: Tiger's up-and-down woes don't present themselves here as he makes his par putt.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 5 over

• • •

Hole #4: Par 4, 470 yards

Things keep getting worse for Tiger, who is in solo 60th – last of the players in the morning wave.

• OFF THE TEE: If anything, Tiger's drives have been solid. He finds the fairway here.

• APPROACH SHOT: Great approach here as Tiger sticks this one inside of 5 feet. He needed that.

• ON THE GREEN: Tweet, tweet. That's a birdie.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 5 over

• • •

Hole #3: Par 4, 466 yards

Tiger is 4 over through 11 holes. Jason Day is 4 over and Jordan Spieth 5 over. It hasn't been a good day for this group.

• APPROACH SHOT: Tiger's approach misses left and finds the sand.

• AROUND THE GREEN: Up-and-downs have been a problem for Woods today. He blasts out to about 5 feet.

• ON THE GREEN: Stop us if you've heard this before . . . another failed up-and-down and Tiger ends up with bogey.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 6 over

• • •

Hole #2: Par 3, 233 yards

Through 10 holes, Tiger has just one birdie and is nine shots off the lead.

• AROUND THE GREEN: Tiger's second shot is about 12 feet short.

• ON THE GREEN: Another failed up-and-down for par and Tiger records another bogey.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 5 over

• • •

Hole #1: Par 4, 402 yards

Tiger cards a 4-over 39 on his first nine. His short game has not been good.

• APPROACH SHOT: Tiger finds the green and will have about 20 feet left for birdie.

• ON THE GREEN: Two-putt par.

ELSEWHERE ON THE COURSE: Ricky Barnes is now 5 under through 14 holes and he leads Patrick Reed by a shot.

• • •

Hole #18: Par 4, 523 yards

One hole left for Tiger to complete his first nine and his play off the tee has looked better than his short game so far.

• OFF THE TEE: Driver misses in the right rough. Approach shot at this long par 4 will be tougher now.

• APPROACH SHOT: Tiger's approach is short and right. He'll need to get up-and-down for par, something he has struggled with today.

• AROUND THE GREEN: Tiger chips up the ridge and ends up a little less than 10 feet away.

• ON THE GREEN: The par putt doesn't drop. Another bogey.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 4 over

• • •

Hole #17: Par 4, 437 yards

Good opportunity wasted by Tiger at the 16th. Still, he has a chance to get back to even par before making the turn.

• OFF THE TEE: Tiger finds the fairway with 3-wood. He's missed just one fairway so far today.

• APPROACH SHOT: Tiger finds the back part of the green, but will have a lengthy putt for birdie upcoming.

• ON THE GREEN: Bogey for Tiger as he sends his first putt about 4 feet by and then misses coming back. That one hurts.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 3 over

ELSEWHERE ON THE COURSE: Ricky Barnes, 3 under through 11 holes, leads, but Patrick Reed, Cameron Tringale and J.B. Holmes are just one shot back.

• • •

Hole #16: Par 5, 579 yards

Bad bogey there at the 15th, but Tiger can get that shot back here at his first par 5 of the day. Tiger, Jason Day and Jordan Spieth are a combined 7 over right now.

• OFF THE TEE: After his last drive went left, Tiger smashes this one down the middle of the fairway.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 over

• • •

Hole #15: Par 4, 490 yards

That birdie at the 14th was Tiger's first birdie since March 8 when he birdied the 16th at Trump Doral during the third round of the WGC-Cadillac Championship.

• OFF THE TEE: Tiger follows the birdie with a missed fairway, his drive finding the left rough.

• APPROACH SHOT: Tiger gets the ball to the fairway just short of the green with his approach.

• AROUND THE GREEN: Not a good chip from Tiger, who still has 10-plus feet left for par.

• ON THE GREEN: The par putt doesn't drop and it's another bogey for Woods.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 over

• • •

Hole #14: Par 4, 467 yards

Through four holes, Tiger has hit both of his fairways and missed just one green. It's his nine putts, though, that have him at 2 over.

• OFF THE TEE: Another good drive for Tiger, another fairway.

• APPROACH SHOT: Tiger produces his best approach shot of the day so far, sticking it to about 10 feet.

• ON THE GREEN: Draino. Tiger gets his first birdie of the day.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 over

• • •

Hole #13: Par 3, 193 yards

Tiger gets his first par after back-to-back bogeys. Now, he gets his second par 3 of the day. Jordan Spieth, Tiger's playing competitor, birdied No. 12 to get back to 1 over while Jason Day stayed at 2 over along with Tiger.

• OFF THE TEE: Tiger finds the back-left portion of the green, which is where the hole is. He'll have about 15 feet left for birdie.

• ON THE GREEN: Tiger misses the birdie roll, but cleans up for par.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 over

• • •

Hole #12: Par 4, 471 yards

Tiger's short game hasn't looked sharp through two holes as he has five putts and a failed sand save. He's still tied for low man in the group, though, as both Day and Spieth are 2 over, as well.

• OFF THE TEE: Tiger finds the right side of the fairway at this dogleg left hole.

• APPROACH SHOT: Tiger finds the green, but will have a lengthy birdie putt again.

• ON THE GREEN: Tiger gets off the bogey train with a two-putt par from about 35 feet.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 over

ELSEWHERE ON THE COURSE: Brendon de Jonge, Tim Wilkinson and Ricky Barnes are currently tied for the lead at 2 under.

• • •

Hole #11: Par 4, 489 yards

Not an ideal start for Tiger, but the 10th is not an easy hole and that bunker shot was not an easy one, either. Jason Day and Jordan Spieth also bogeyed the hole.

• OFF THE TEE: Tiger's first test with the driver and he passes it. Big hit down the left side of the fairway.

• APPROACH SHOT: From the fairway, Tiger's approach ends up pin-high and just stays on the back portion of the green.

• ON THE GREEN: Tiger leaves this putt well short – he had about 40 feet and the putt went just more than 20 feet. He then misses the par save. Another bogey.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 over

• • •

Hole #10: Par 3, 218 yards

Tiger is wearing a green shirt and black pants today. His hat, belt and shoes are also black. He'll tee off starting on the back nine alongside Jason Day and Jordan Spieth.

• OFF THE TEE: Tiger's first shot is long and finds the back greenside bunker.

• AROUND THE GREEN: Tough bunker shot here and Tiger leaves himself a little more than 15 feet for par.

• ON THE GREEN: Tiger can't convert the up-and-down for par and opens his tournament with bogey.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 over

Tiger's return

Woods: If not for foundation, might not play Quicken

Tiger Woods conceded that if the Tiger Woods Foundation were not involved with this week's event, he likely wouldn't be here. "As I said, our goal was the British Open," he said. "I healed extremely fast, thanks to my physios and all my nutrition and all the different things that we did and the protocols. The MRIs and all the different steps that we have done along the way have allowed me to get to this point."

Predictably, Woods feels 'great'; his play will say more

Different injuries, different scenarios. But two things remain constant when Tiger Woods steps into what unfortunately has become the accustomed role of comeback kid: One, it takes mere seconds for you to realize that there’s far more buzz when he tees it up. And two, he seems to have a standard speech, because he sure says the same thing a lot.

Eventually, even expectations for Tiger must change

This wasn’t a typical Wednesday pro-am for Tiger Woods. This one was more about tuneup, about refining, than usual. When you haven’t played a competitive round since March 9, when you are coming back from March 31 microdiscectomy, an 18-hole walk with amateur partners can be about trying to scrape off a layer of rust. Pro-ams generally aren’t something to get excited about.

Woods has made cuts in previous returns

This week's Quicken Loans National won't be Tiger Woods' first return from an injury-induced layoff, but it will be his first after back surgery. Here's a look at previous returns from injury.

Notes: FedEx Cup picture; British Open tickets punched; more

True, there’s time to make a move and one big week – a victory, perhaps – will take care of a lot of problems, but as we creep toward July 1, there are three notable names who can’t exactly pencil the Tour Championship into their schedules.

Hunter Mahan sits 73rd in the FedEx Cup standings, Phil Mickelson 86th and Steve Stricker 124th.

Judge limits Singh's discovery in case against PGA Tour

Vijay Singh's attempt to look behind the curtain of the PGA Tour's drug policy will be limited, according to a recent court ruling. In Singh's lawsuit against the Tour, Judge Eileen Bransten of New York's Supreme Court granted part of a motion to compel documents and answers from the Tour but denied other parts of the motion, notably regarding specific questions about the Anti-Doping Program.
