Tiger Woods withdrew from the Honda Classic during Sunday's final round, citing a lower-back issue that has plagued him during the past six months.

Woods, 38, struggled early in the final round at PGA National's Champion Course, turning at 5-over 40, but he seemed to right the ship and was even par through four holes on the back nine.

After making a 2-foot par putt on the 13th hole, Woods walked up to playing competitor Luke Guthrie and shook hands and was taken by a van off the golf course and to his car in the players' parking lot.

Glenn Greenspan, a spokesman for Woods, released a statement about Woods' condition.

“It's lower-back problems with spasms. It started this morning during warmups.

"Regarding Doral, too early to tell. I’ll get treatment every day to try to calm it down; don’t know yet.

"We’ll see how I am, wait till Thursday and see how it feels.

"Basically the same thing, feeling as it was, at Barclays.”

For Woods, the withdrawal was his seventh in his career on the PGA Tour. His last came at the WGC-Cadillac Championship two years ago at Doral, when Woods felt tightness in his left Achilles tendon during the final round and withdrew after his tee shot on the 12th hole.

Woods returned a little more than a week later to play in the Tavistock Cup exhibition, then went on to win his next event, the Arnold Palmer Invitational. He finished 40th at that year's Masters.

Woods had been seen stretching his back during Sunday's final round of the Honda Classic.

"Tiger making some weird stretches on 11 after his tee shot. Wonder if his back is acting up," Golfweek senior writer Adam Schupak tweeted. "On 11 tee, Tiger looked like he was doing the Miguel Angel Jimenez stretching routine," Schupak added later.
