Washington's Pan qualifies for Open Championship

Washington junior Cheng-Tsung Pan tied for second at an Open Series Qualifying event in Thailand to qualify for the 2014 Open Championship.

Washington junior Cheng-Tsung Pan qualified for the 2014 Open Championship on Friday in an Open Series Qualifying event in Chonburi, Thailand.

Pan finished tied for second at the qualifier, shooting a pair of 2-under 70s, and was one of four players to advance to this summer's major championship July 17-20 at Royal Liverpool in Hoylake, England. Japan's Hiroshi Iwata was medalist while China's Ashun Wu and Japan's Tohinobu Tsukada also advanced.

“I’m still in a state of shock but at the same time I’m really happy with how I have played considering how tough this qualifier has been,” Pan said in a release.

“Playing in the Open Championship has always been a dream of mine. The conditions are going to be very different from the US at Royal Liverpool but I guess that’s what golf is all about. You have got to learn to play and compete under different conditions and hopefully I can do well again in July.”
