Former ASU players gather prior to Founders Cup
PHOENIX –– With so many former Arizona State players in the field at this week’s JTBC Founders Cup – seven to be exact – the Sun Devil coaches organized a mini-reunion on Sunday at Modern Margarita to kick off the week.
Associate coach Missy Farr-Kaye, a 1990 ASU grad, said 18 former players attended the reunion and four brought babies. Emilee Klein-Gille, the 1994 NCAA champ and a three-time winner on the LPGA, is pregnant with her second child.
“One of our tenets at ASU is that we are a Sun Devil family,” said Farr-Kaye, who was out by the putting green on Tuesday handing out ASU head covers.
Anna Nordqvist, this year’s winner in Thailand, headlines the group of Sun Devils followed by Azahara Munoz, who suffered a heartbreaker of a loss to Paula Creamer the next week in Singapore. Munoz will be a part of a televised meet and greet with fans on Wednesday at the Blue Martini in North Scottsdale at 5 p.m. The Spaniard won the 2008 NCAA title and helped the team win a national championship in 2009.
Carlota Ciganda, Jennifer Johnson, Giulia Molinaro and Jaclyn Sweeney are also in the field. Johnson won an LPGA event in Mobile last year. Ciganda was the LET’s 2012 Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year, taking the money title.
Heather Bowie Young, the veteran of the group, helped ASU win two national championships before transferring to Texas, where she won the individual title.
