Q&A with Keith Brown of State Traditions

In 2007, Keith Brown was looking for a way to showcase state pride in and around Birmingham, Ala. Thus, his apparel company, State Traditions, was born. The clothing line is catching on in the golf market. Brown offers insight on State Traditions:
1. What is State Traditions?
State Traditions is a lifestyle apparel and accessories company that uses state and country silhouettes, with plays on color and identifying marks, to celebrate traditions and allegiances across America and the world.
2. What made you get into golf fashion?
Our line was initially created for everyday wear, but as we developed, it was apparent that most products worked perfectly for golfers. Whether you’re on your home course or one halfway across the country, State Traditions subtly conveys your allegiances to playing partners without flashy logos or bold colors. Cotton and performance knits, headwear and belts, among other items, fit and feel great. We're all golfers here at State Traditions too, so we design all pieces with the sport in mind!
3. How is your product different than other golf fashion companies?
First, State Traditions is unique across all fashion. No one in the market has an entire line built around our concept of giving consumers a mark with which they already identify. It’s not an animal, or other logo, it’s simply the state to which they have a strong connection. Maybe it’s where they grew up, went to school, or played a memorable round of golf at a great course with their buddies.
Second, there a lot of great golf lines out there, but they are competing for customer attention by following trends in patterns, styles or colors. Our aesthetic gives green grass, resort and specialty shops the opportunity to connect with customers in a very personal way, whether it’s members or those looking for a fashionable memento from a great buddy trip. The line, built around timeless style with modern design elements, and of course our state outlines, offers customers staple pieces they can enjoy year after year.
4. What is your favorite piece of clothing from State Traditions and why?
Personally, my favorite is our belt. I have several I mix and match to a variety of shorts, knit or woven shirts, pants and even jeans. It's just enough color, substantive yet simple, and they break in nicely. For our customers, the favorite is probably our hats. The State Traditions headwear line is our deepest and serves as the brand’s flagship product. It's a fun alternative to sport or manufacturer logos. But that could change quickly, we’ve got a lot of new products launching for this summer, including swim and other super-comfortable, versatile pieces perfect for the club or weekend wear.
5. What are your plans to expand this company in the next three to five years?
State Traditions has experienced a fair amount of growth these last few years that trend will continue strong. We have a loyal customer base of clubs peppered across the country which to expand one by one. We're strident but not overly aggressive, as we always want to give each customer the attention they deserve.
