Blayne Barber captures 1st Web.com Tour victory
Sunday, May 4, 2014
Blayne Barber earned his first Web.com Tour victory Sunday, winning the South Georgia Classic at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club in Valdosta, Ga.
Barber, who grew up about an hour away in Lake City, Fla., closed with a 5-under 67 to finish at 15-under 273. After entering the final round two shots off the lead, he made seven birdies with his only mistake coming at the par-4 12th, where he made double bogey.
"It feels so great," Barber said. "I didn't look at a scoreboard all day and I'm realizing now that it happened. Today was just a blur. I played some good golf and the next thing I know I'm sitting here as a champion. I really didn't see it coming this week. It really came from out of nowhere."
Alex Prugh was runner-up, two shots back of Barber at 13 under, while Carloz Oritz, who was searching for his third win of the season and a PGA Tour promotion, placed third at 12 under.
The victory is Barber's first top 10 of the season. In seven starts, Barber now has five finishes of T-22 or better. His previous best finish on the Web.com Tour was a T-2 showing at the 2013 News Sentinel Open.
Two years ago, Barber disqualified himself from the first stage of PGA Tour Q-School (Click here to read more). He then earned his card via Web.com Tour Q-School prior to this season.
"I feel like I'm not very good at overcoming adversity," Barber said. "I think the reason I came out on top today was that I just took my hands off the steering wheel a little bit and just played golf and didn't look at any boards."
