Brandon Hagy, a senior at Cal, was awarded the 2014 Byron Nelson Award on Monday.

"It's humbling," Hagy said. "Just to be associated with Mr. Nelson's name is pretty special. . . . Everything that the award is about, those are the reasons why I went to Cal.

Candidates for the award, presented by Cleveland Golf/Srixon, must be a graduating senior. The election committee elected a winner based on their entire golf and academic career, as well as their character and integrity, including good citizenship.

Hagy's teammate and roommate, Joel Stalter, was also a finalist.

Hagy is the seventh-ranked player in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, is a semifinalist for the Ben Hogan Award and will play for the U.S. in the 2014 Palmer Cup. Academically, he has earned numerous scholar-athlete honors and will graduate from Cal's Haas School of Business this month.

His involvement in the community is plentiful, too. He is an officer on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, which organizes community-service activities for Cal athletes, and volunteers with the First Tee, Northern California Golf Association's Youth on Course, and the Special Olympics.

"The Special Olympics have been a big part of my life," Hagy said. "I've been doing it since high school. . . . It's something I'm really proud of doing."
