Game in shape, Constable advances in qualifying

Donald Constable advanced through U.S. Open local qualifying at Stillwater (Minn.) CC, sharing medalist honors with two others.

“Karma is experience, and experience creates memory, and memory creates imagination and desire,” said new-age guru Deepak Chopra.

On Monday, just 24 hours after the University of Minnesota men’s golf team clinched a Big Ten title at French Lick, Ind., the good karma flowed to former Gopher Donald Constable.

Constable, along with Jon Olson of Ankeny, Iowa, and Grant Dockendorf of River Falls, Wis., shared medalist honors at their U.S. Open local qualifier after carding rounds of 2-under par 70 at Stillwater (Minn.) Country Club.

They will now move on to the next stage of qualifying for the 114th U.S. Open to be played next month on the famed Pinehurst No. 2.

“These qualifiers are tricky,” Constable said after his round. “You never know what it will take to move on. It’s not a very long golf course, but you have to keep it in play.”

Constable, who was the Minnesota high school state champion in 2005 and 2006, spent two seasons on the University of Minnesota golf team before earning PGA Tour status in 2012. In 15 PGA Tour and Web.com starts in 2013, he failed to make a cut; he's No. 768 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings.

“The game’s good right now,” said Constable, who spent his offseason in Georgia working on his swing. “It was a little shaky over the winter, but I was working hard on some things and that’s definitely the time to do it.”

A few years ago after one of Donald’s victories, Tracy, who is his mother said, “We have a very strong faith. If it’s God’s will, it will happen.”

Hopefully for Constable, the good Karma will keep flowing for the rest of the season – turning the exceptional junior player into an exceptional professional.
