PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Although the future of the WGC-Match Play Championship remains one big question mark, there seems to be one certainty: It won’t be in its traditional spot on the PGA Tour's calendar.

Having been a February staple since it debuted in 1999, the Match Play Championship always has been the finale to the West Coast Swing and the tournament that ushered players toward the Florida Swing. But that will not be the case in 2015.

A perusal through various websites of the title sponsors affords a peek at what is in store for the early months of 2015, and there doesn’t appear to be any room for the Match Play Championship in the first four months. With the Hyundai Tournament of Champions pushed back off of New Year’s Day, to a Jan. 9-12 slot, the tournaments would thus flow this way:

  • Jan. 15-18: Sony Open
  • Jan. 22-25: Humana Challenge
  • Jan. 29-Feb. 1: Waste Management Phoenix Open
  • Feb. 5-8: Farmers Insurance Open
  • Feb. 12-15: AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am
  • Feb. 19-22: Northern Trust Open
  • Feb. 26-March 1: Honda Classic
  • March 5-8: WGC-Cadillac Championship
  • March 12-15: Valspar Championship
  • March 19-22: Arnold Palmer Invitational
  • March 26-29: Valero Texas Open
  • April 2-5: Shell Houston Open
  • April 9-12: Masters
  • April 16-19: RBC Heritage

This is not to say a Match Play Championship won’t be played in 2015, but the fact is, a title sponsor has yet to be landed. “It’s been taking longer than we thought,” PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem said.

He added that he hopes to have a decision on the tournament by the end of May.
