Vanderbilt entered Friday's second round of the NCAA San Antonio Regional in ninth place. But after a second-round, 15-under 273, the Commodores are now in second place, two shots behind leader Georgia, with one round left.
"It was a great day," Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh said. "I told the guys (Thursday) afternoon that we were really close to playing really good. Just clean up the simple mistakes and focus on doing the simple things better, and that's what they did today."
The Commodores were led by senior Charlie Ewing and junior Hunter Stewart, who each shot 5-under 67 in the second round and are both tied for fifth individually. Ewing made eight birdies, including one on each of his final four holes. Stewart was bogey-free, making four birdies and an eagle.
Junior Jordan Janico (68) and sophomore Carson Jacobs (70) were also under par for Vanderbilt.
"This is a player's time of year," Limbaugh said. "I'm really proud of Jordan and Carson. I challenged those guys last night to go out and lead us and start the charge, and they did. I was really proud of them. But it was a team effort."

The Horned Frogs junior is now 10 under, four shots clear of second-place Bryson Dechambeau of SMU. As a team, TCU is now at 2-over 578, which has the Horned Frogs tied with UCLA and Georgia Southern for fifth place.
The top five teams advance to the NCAA Championship later this month in Hutchinson, Kan.

Central Florida seniors Greg Eason and Ricardo Gouveia combined to shoot 8 under Friday with Eason carding a 6-under 66. Both are T-8 or better, too, although the Knights currently sit in ninth place, four shots out of a tie for fifth. . . . College of Charleston, the 11th seed that was second after the first round, recorded the second-worst round of the day, an 8-over 296, to fall back to eighth place. . . . Georgia State's Tyler Gruca was one of two players to shoot 66 Friday – Eason was the other – and he's now tied for third with Georgia's Lee McCoy.
