Scott rebounds to salvage 71 at Crowne Plaza

FORT WORTH, Texas – “Mercy me,” said an elderly female fan as Adam Scott’s drive at the 375-yard, par-4 second hole soared high into the air. He bombed it to within 35 yards of the hole and made a tap-in birdie. But for the first nine holes of the first round Thursday, Scott was bombing as the newly-minted World No. 1 at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.
Scott, who started on the 10th tee, struggled to a 4-over 39 in which he didn’t make a birdie.
“I thought I actually hit plenty of good shots and played from the fairway for 4 over,” said Scott, who recently replaced Tiger Woods as No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking.
Did he feel any different playing with the No. 1 target on his back?
“Maybe a little pressure,” he said afterwards, “but not really.”
Scott rallied, playing his second nine bogey-free, to finish at 1-over 71. He two-putted for birdie at the par-5 first hole, nearly holed his short pitch at No. 2 and drained a 23-foot birdie putt at the eighth.
“I can’t say I found my rhythm in shooting 4 over (on the first nine), but I felt like everything was in a good spot,” he said. “I just have to be patient.”
