Walters State Community College led wire-to-wire for its first national title, scoring a nine-shot victory over Mesa Community College May 23 in the NJCAA Division II Men’s Championship.
Walters State (Morristown, Tenn.) finished at 37-over 1,189 to Mesa (Ariz.) CC’s 1,200 at Swan Lake Resort’s Black Course in Plymouth, Ind.
Brad Hawkins (T-5) and Cody Johnson (T-8) led the Senators.
Levi Fink of North Iowa Area Community College won the individual championship with a 1-under 287, two shots better than Charlie Cameron of Tyler (Texas) Junior College. Fink, playing the national championship as an individual, opened with a 5-over 77 but shot 68-72-70 to win. Cameron opened with 79 and played the final 54-holes in 6 under.
“It’s a great feeling knowing that I was coming from a Northern school and I was able to beat all the golfers from Southern schools that have played a lot more rounds this spring because of the weather,” Fink said.
