Peter Uihlein will have to wait until next year to play in his first U.S. Open as a professional. The 2010 U.S. Amateur champion has pulled out of Monday’s U.S. Open International Sectional Qualifier at Walton Heath Golf Club, England due to back problems.

The former Oklahoma State player only played three holes of the European Tour’s BMW PGA Championship before withdrawing. He has also pulled out of next week’s Nordea Masters in Sweden, and is due to have an MRI scan to diagnose the problem.

Uihlein was due to take his place in the 108-man field for the 12 spots available for Pinehurst next month.

The 24-year-old played in the 2011 U.S. Open as an amateur but missed the cut. He tried to qualify at Walton Heath last year but failed to seal a spot at Merion.

Padraig Harrington is the biggest name in the draw. His appearance proves just how far he’s fallen down the world order. The three-time major winner faces the prospect of missing the U.S. Open for the first time since 1999.

The Dubliner has five top-10 finishes in America’s national championship. He was fourth at the Olympic Club two years ago, his best U.S. Open finish.

He tees off at 9:18 a.m. on Monday in the company of England’s Graeme Storm hoping he can qualify for Pinehurst, and make the U.S. Open the third leg of the Grand Slam along with two Open Championship wins and a PGA Championship victory.
