Gridiron neighbors: Stanford, TPC Harding Park

TPC Harding Park in San Francisco will host the 2015 WGC Match Play Championship, the 2020 PGA Championship and the 2025 Presidents Cup.

Each week this football season, we'll take a look at some great layouts listed among Golfweek's Best Courses You Can Play and located near the biggest games on the gridiron.

No. 14 USC at No. 13 Stanford

Saturday, 3:30 p.m. EDT

On the field: Two-time defending Pac-12 champion Stanford will see if junior QB Kevin Hogan can keep his mistakes in check this season, starting with a tall order against a talent-laden Southern Cal defense. The Trojans offense, meanwhile, gave new head coach Steve Sarkisian plenty to smile about in dismantling Fresno State last week.

On the tee: If you have a day to dedicate to golf, allowing a drive of about 2 hours each way, Pebble Beach Golf Links is a no-brainer at No. 1 among Golfweek's Best Courses You Can Play in California – same goes for close neighbor and No. 2 on that list, Spyglass Hill. Cutting that drive in half, Pasatiempo in Santa Cruz checks in at No. 3 on that list. Also about an hour away is CordeValle in San Martin, No. 6 on that list. Less than an hour away, TPC Harding Park in San Francisco is No. 23 on that list with Presidio Golf Club in the next spot. Oh by the way, Stanford GC checks in at No. 6 on Golfweek's Best Campus Courses this year.

Honorable mention

No. 7 Michigan State at No. 3 Oregon: Bandon and its many offerings are more than two hours away by car, but the top four courses on the state's Best You Can Play list await.

Michigan at No. 16 Notre Dame: The Warren Course is No. 13 on Golfweek's Best Campus Courses and is No. 6 on the state's Best You Can Play list.
