John Daly looks on during a practice round prior to the start of The Open Championship at Royal Liverpool.

HOYLAKE, England – John Daly had one word for the Royal Liverpool rough. “Brutal,” he said Wednesday on the eve of the 143rd Open Championship.

Daly should know. He said he lost six balls on the front nine of a Monday practice round despite the fact “four of the shots weren’t that bad.”

The 1995 Open champion – wearing his usual wild slacks, this time a colorful SpongeBob SquarePants style – uncharacteristically was among the last players on the practice ground Wednesday night. Among other things, he was trying to figure out how to handle the 447-yard, dogleg-left 12th.

“I can make ...

Ian Poulter practices for the 2014 Open Championship at Royal Liverpool in Hoylake, England.

Ian Poulter is a go for the Open Championship.

Poulter, who injured his right wrist during last week's Scottish Open, said that an MRI on the wrist revealed no serious damage. However, the Englishman has a ganglion cyst.

"By jarring it, by taking a force of a whack (on my wrist), some of that fluid has come out of the joint and into the cyst sac . . . it's just touching on the nerve," Poulter said Tuesday at Royal Liverpool. "So I'm just getting a little bit of pain. So I'll be chewing some anti-inflammatories and some painkillers ...

Fred Couples was an assistant captain for the U.S. during the 2012 Ryder Cup at Medinah.
Fred Couples was an assistant captain for the U.S. during the 2012 Ryder Cup at Medinah.

What if Bernhard Langer had another go at that missed 6-footer watched ‘round the world at Kiawah Island in 1991? Or if Mark Calcavecchia had another shot at Colin Montgomerie, to whom he coughed up a 4-up lead that very same afternoon? And who wouldn’t want to see Fred Couples hitting another Ryder Cup shot, or stand witness to Montgomerie again puffing out his chest as the leader of All Things Europe?

Pipe dream? Maybe not. Golfweek has learned the PGA of America and the European and PGA tours are far down the road on the creation of a ...

Gary Player during the 2014 Masters Par-3 Contest at Augusta National.

His playing days are over, but his love affair with the Open Championship still rages, so it was no surprise to see Gary Player at Royal Liverpool for the 143rd edition.

He made his debut in this greatest of all championships at Royal Liverpool in 1956, finishing fourth on trips of 71-76-73-71. Three years later, he won at Muirfield, the first of his three Claret Jugs, and one thing has remained constant all these years.

Player embraces everything about links, about this precious style of play, and he is always willing to share some thoughts about the game that has ...

Coming on the heels of Germany's World Cup victory over Argentina, Martin Kaymer has a chance this week to become the first back-to-back major champion since 2008.

Martin Kaymer has a chance this week to become the first back-to-back major champion since 2008, when Padraig Harrington won the Open Championship and PGA Championship.

Of course, the German's quest for his second consecutive major crown comes on the heels of his country's 1-0 victory over Argentina in the World Cup final Sunday in Brazil.

"To be honest, it was probably the first moment in my career as an athlete where I was very, very proud to be a German athlete – not because of my own success," Kaymer said Tuesday at Royal Liverpool. "The win is one ...

One of golf's greatest honoring one of baseball's greatest?

In the new Nike commercial that shows several celebrities from sports, entertainment and politics, including the 14-time major champion, tipping their caps to the retiring New York Yankees shortstop, that's just what we get.

Woods, Jay-Z, Phil Jackson, Carmelo Anthony and Michael Jordan are among those paying tribute to Jeter, 40, a 14-time all-star in 20 seasons with the Yankees, during the 1 minute, 30 seconds of the commercial.

Zach Johnson's runner-up finish to Brian Harman at the John Deere Classic moved him into the top 9 of the latest U.S. Ryder Cup standings.

Johnson, who jumped six spots from 15th, now holds the final automatic qualify spot on Tom Watson's squad. The top 9 players after the PGA Championship will be selected to the team with Watson naming three additional captain's picks in early September.

Dropping out of the top 9 was Patrick Reed, who fell to 10th. Bubba Watson held onto the top spot while Phil Mickelson is currently 11th.

TPC Harding Park in San Francisco will host the 2015 WGC Match Play Championship, the 2020 PGA Championship and the 2025 Presidents Cup.

There won’t be six weeks in May, but the PGA Tour’s projected 2014-15 schedule might make it seem as if the month has been expanded.

Already jampacked with marquee stops, May grew more crowded when officials confirmed that the WGC-Match Play Championship will be staged April 29-May 3 at a new home, Harding Park in San Francisco – with a new format, 16 four-man brackets of round-robin play for three days, followed by 16 winners advancing to single-elimination match play Saturday and Sunday.

It’s a fresh coast of paint on a foundation that might be shaky. The Match ...

Cart-path relief? Not for Phil Mickelson.

Playing it as it lies on the pavement on the par-4 13th at Royal Aberdeen in the first round of the Scottish Open, Mickelson not only caught the ball cleanly but hit it onto the green and inside 10 feet of the pin – going on to make birdie.

• VIDEO: See Mickelson's cart-path shot here.

The birdie got Mickelson to 4 under with five to play. The defending champ went on to shoot 3-under 68 after a bogey at the last, leaving him four off the early lead of Rory McIlroy.

Tiger Woods is currently No. 209 in the FedEx Cup standings.
Tiger Woods is currently No. 209 in the FedEx Cup standings.

For some of golf's most heralded names, the FedEx Cup is more like playoff headache because as the dog days of summer settle in, there’s no guarantee that they’ll be in the postseason.

Of particular note, there are four players who made it into the final 30 last year (aka the Tour Championship) but are currently outside the cutoff of No. 125 to make the playoffs: Nick Watney, who ranks 132nd; Roberto Castro, 143rd; D.A. Points, 184th; and Tiger Woods, 209th.

Toss in Steve Stricker, who has played in each of the seven Tour Championships since ...

Ian Poulter has dropped to No. 25 in the Official World Golf Ranking.

ABERDEEN, Scotland – If Ian Poulter were 12 and not 38, he likely would have a poster of Henrik Stenson on his bedroom wall as a reminder of what can happen.

Stenson’s success in the later half of the 2013 season, when he swept the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup and the European Tour's Race To Dubai, is something that Poulter would love to duplicate.

And like Stenson in 2013, Poulter in 2014 has found the beginning of the season to be a struggle.

“He didn't get off to the best of starts for the season but then ...

Laura Davies plays a practice round on Tuesday at Pinehurst No. 2, two days ahead of the start of the U.S. Women's Open.

SOUTHPORT, England – Laura Davies can’t recall much about her first Women’s British Open, in 1980. She thought she’d made the cut, but, when told otherwise, smiled and said “I’m rubbish.”

Few things on tour are more entertaining than a Davies interview, and on Wednesday she dished out a few gems while being honored as a new member of Royal Birkdale, site of her only Women’s British title, in 1986.

“At the time it seemed easy,” said Davies, who was honored last year by the queen with a damehood, “but I haven’t won one since ...
