Recruiting Extra

Tanner Owens of Murfreesboro, Tenn., has realized a dream of playing collegiate golf for Virginia Tech. The high-school junior has committed to joining the Hokie roster beginning in 2016.

Owens' parents attended Virginia Tech, so it seemed only natural that he would, too.

“Their coach (Jay Hardwick) up there is great,” Owens told the Daily News Journal. “It was a great atmosphere at Virginia Tech. They have all the facilities and a great weight room. ... I grew up going to games there. It was the dream school for me.”

Owens also had offers from Middle Tennessee State, Tennessee and Memphis ...

Recruiting Extra
Davis Shore plans to join Wilson Furr and Ben Fuller at Alabama in 2017.
Davis Shore plans to join Wilson Furr and Ben Fuller at Alabama in 2017.

Growing up in Knoxville as the son of a Tennessee alumnus, Davis Shore was truly in the heart of Volunteer country.

But Shore, the No. 1 class-of-2017 golfer according to the Golfweek/Sagarin Junior Rankings, made it clear that his alliances can change quickly, even in SEC country. He's now a part of the Crimson Tide through and through after committing to play college golf for head coach Jay Seawell.

"It was a tough decision overall, but, all around, Alabama was the place for me," said Shore.

The Tennessean is just a part of the major coup that Seawell ...

Wilson Furr, widely considered one of the top recruits in the Class of 2017, verbally committed to Alabama on Friday.

"It's a great feeling," Furr told Golfweek on Friday night via phone. "It's been a long process. It was a really tough decision."

Furr is ranked No. 22 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Junior Rankings, and is No. 3 among 2017 recruits. He first posted the news on social media.

"Happy to say that I have committed to play golf at the University of Alabama! #RTR," Furr tweeted.

Kristian Caparros, a junior golfer from Hollywood, Fla., has turned professional.

Junior golfer Kristian Caparros has turned professional. The Hollywood, Fla., native posted that news Tuesday night on his Twitter and Instagram accounts.

Caparros first told Golfweek in April that he planned to turn pro instead of signing with the University of Florida. Caparros, a 2015 recruit, committed to the Gators in 2012.

He said in August that he planned to stay amateur until after the high-school golf season. Last month, he finished second behind teammate and Florida signee Jorge Garcia to help lead American Heritage High School in Plantation, Fla., to the Class 2A state title.

Caparros advanced to the ...

Sierra Brooks defeated Lauren Stephenson, 4 and 3, in the girls final of the Polo Golf Junior Classic.

Spencer Soosman and Sierra Brooks captured titles Friday at the Polo Golf Junior Classic, although they did it in different fashion.

Soosman, a Westlake Village, Calif., native, trailed for much of his match against Matthew Wolff of Agoura Hills, Calif., in the boys final. He went 1 down to Wolff after the second hole at PGA National's Champion Course, then was 3 down through seven holes. But he was able to force extra holes and prevail with par on the 20th hole.

Prior to knocking off Wolff, Soosman, ranked 35th in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, topped No. 1 Sam ...

Lauren Stephenson during the AJGA Girls Championship.

The biggest winner so far in the AJGA’s Polo Golf Junior Classic fell Thursday at the hand of Matthew Wolff. In fact Wolff, of Agoura Hills, Calif., prevailed after perhaps the toughest round of matches yet. He defeated defending champion Cameron Young in the morning – a feat which took 20 holes to accomplish – before moving on to stroke-play medalist Sam Horsfield in the afternoon.

Horsfield had looked nearly untouchable so far at PGA National Resort in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. He won his first three matches in 14 holes or fewer.

Wolff, however, clawed back after Horsfield got him ...

Sam Horsfield has advanced to the quarterfinals at the AJGA's Polo Golf Junior Classic.

Sam Horsfield didn’t have to play past the 14th hole in either of his two matches Wednesday at the Polo Golf Junior Classic. Horsfield claimed a pair of 6-and-4 victories to move to the quarterfinals.

Horsfield, who has committed to play for Florida next year, first knocked off Jake DeZoort, then took on Davis Shore in the afternoon. Horsfield next will meet Jack Comstock at PGA National Resort’s Champion Course in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

“I played pretty well both rounds,” Horsfield said. “I’m happy to get through the two rounds; it was a long day, so ...

Sam Horsfield during the Round of 64 at the 2014 U.S. Junior Amateur.

Sam Horsfield secured the top spot on the match-play bracket Tuesday with his first-place finish after two rounds of stroke play at the AJGA’s Polo Golf Junior Classic.

Horsfield, of Davenport, Fla., followed a first-round 68 at PGA National’s Fazio Course in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., with 1-over 72 at the Champions Course. That left him one shot ahead of Nathan Jeansonne of Keithville, La. Austin Connelly of Irving, Texas, drew the third spot on the bracket by finishing another shot back.

Sam Horsfield shares the first-round lead with Jorge Garcia and Cameron Young at the Polo Golf Junior Classic.

Sam Horsfield and Jorge Garcia officially signed to play college golf together earlier this month. Less than two weeks later, the future University of Florida golfers find themselves tied atop the leaderboard along with Wake Forest signee Cameron Young at the AJGA's Polo Golf Junior Classic.

Horsfield, Garcia and Young each shot 4-under 68 Monday in the first of two stroke-play-qualifying rounds at PGA National's Fazio Course in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Jorge Garcia lost in the championship at the 2013 Polo Golf Junior Classic after making it through some of the top names in junior golf.

Competitors beware: Jorge Garcia plays best with his back against the wall.

Last year at the Polo Golf Junior Classic, Garcia must not have felt quite enough stress during the 36 holes of stroke-play qualifying. Garcia shot 4-over 75 in consecutive days to take the 30th spot in match play competition.

But something clicked during his first match against Benjamin Griffin, who has since gone on to win two collegiate events at North Carolina.

Garcia won three of his final five holes against Griffin to take a 1-up victory, then went on to top the likes of Robin Wang, Sam ...

Donnie Trosper tied Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson with his fourth AJGA victory after winning the Ping Invitational.

If someone had told Donnie Trosper two months ago that he'd be attending college in the state of Florida, he might not have believed it.

Trosper, who lives in Canton, Mich., was uncommitted and considering Pepperdine, Michigan State and Eastern Michigan before winning the AJGA's Ping Invitational in October. Shortly after, Central Florida head coach Bryce Wallor came calling.

"They contacted me about a month ago," said Trosper, who also fielded late interest from San Diego State and Colorado State, among others. "We went down there for a tour. They have a nice range and the facilities are ...

The AJGA maintained its quick pace of play from 2013 to 2014, the organization reports.

The American Junior Golf Association has reached a point of sustainability in pace of play. The organization has trimmed its average pace to a quick yet repeatable time, and that’s something worth celebrating.

The AJGA revealed last week that its average pace of four hours, 17 minutes stayed the same from 2013 to ’14. It remains the lowest average pace in AJGA history.

“We’re not striving to play in four hours, 10 minutes – it’s not realistic,” said Mark Oskarson, AJGA chief operating officer.

The numbers were distributed from AJGA headquarters in Braselton, Ga., on Nov. 13 as ...
