Keegan Bradley, 27, rookie, Jupiter, Fla.: Yes, he’s ultra-fidgety and looks like he makes coffee nervous. Looks like someone about to start a race on the playground. But he went 3-0 with Mickelson as a Ryder Cup rookie last year. He attacks as a long, straight driver.

Jason Dufner, 36, rookie, Auburn, Ala.: If he were more laid back, he’d be asleep. Turned around subpar season with ballstriking clinic in winning PGA Championship. Not nervous on big stage (3-1 at Ryder). Not nervous anywhere, not even when he’s Dufnering.

Bill Haas, 31, 1-3-1, Greenville, S.C.: Didn’t fair well at 2011 Presidents Cup in Australia, but the AT&T National champ (apparently quietly) has amassed nine Tour top 10s this year, tied for most. Strength is GIR, good for foursomes. Great golf bloodline.

Zach Johnson, 37, 4-5-0, St. Simons Island, Ga.: His season picked up serious steam down stretch, when he won BMW and had six other top 10s after July 4. A control player who putts very well, he’s perfect for foursomes.

Matt Kuchar, 35, 1-3-1, Sea Island, Ga.: Happy-go-lucky sort of guy who just keeps racking up top 10s year after year with a game that has no big weaknesses. Went 1-3-1 in Australia in 2011 but is 2-0-2 in Ryder four-ball. Not the best driver but knows how to score.

Hunter Mahan, 31, 8-5-1, Colleyville, Texas: Not many players hit the ball better than Mahan. You want him driving the ball (eighth total driving). Putting has improved. Comfortable on big stage now. Played in final group at summer’s two major Opens though fell back.

Phil Mickelson, 43, 18-14-10, Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.: The guy’s in the Hall of Fame because he knows how to win (even in links golf now) and is a short-game magician. Perfect for this format because he likes to take a kid under his wing and mentor. Don’t be surprised if he pairs with Jordan Spieth.

Webb Simpson, 28, 3-2-0, Charlotte, N.C.: The 2012 U.S. Open champion overcame a tweaked neck and showed his top stuff at Tour Championship. Teamed well with Bubba Watson in Australia. Went 2-0 in Ryder four-ball last year. All-around solid game.

Brandt Snedeker, 32, rookie, Nashville, Tenn. Went 1-2-0 at last year’s Ryder. Has the ability to tear an opponent’s heart out with his putting. Despite rib injury after hot start to season, he co-led Tour with nine top 10s, including two victories.

Jordan Spieth, 20, rookie, Dallas: As he showed in FedEx Cup playoffs, the kid can make birdies in bunches. Unafraid, he thrives on big stages and delivers wow moments. He not only showed he deserves to be on the U.S. team, he is one of its top guns.

Steve Stricker, 46, 11-8-0, Madison, Wis.: Stricker said after a poor 2012 Ryder that his cup days might be over. But then he had a brilliant 2013, with eight top 10s in 13 starts, including going 2-4-2 in the last three FedEx playoff events. Golf’s best part-time player. He’ll be fresh.

Tiger Woods, 37, 20-14-1, Jupiter, Fla.: Golf’s No. 1 player for years, Woods hasn’t been at his best in team events. Curiously, he’s 13-17-3 in Ryder. But his game is lethal again, with five Tour victories this year. He and Stricker were tough team to beat till last year’s Ryder. Driver only club in bag he doesn’t have dialed in.
