Photo detail

The SpeedBlade has a slot cut into the sole of the 3- through 7-irons allowing the face to flex more effectively at impact.

TaylorMade unveiled the SpeedBlade irons on Monday evening at Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest, Ill., before the start of the 2013 BMW Championship.
The SpeedBlade irons will be available starting Oct. 4 for $799 with steel shafts and $899 with graphite shafts.
The SpeedBlade has a slot cut into the sole of the 3- through 7-irons allowing the face to flex more effectively at impact.
The slot is 3 millimeters longer than the one found in TaylorMade's RocketBladez irons, and it has been made larger in the heel and toe areas to increase consistency and enlarge the sweetspot, according to the company.
The center of gravity in the SpeedBlade has been lowered to help create a higher initial launch angle.
With a wide sole that features camber, the SpeedBlade is designed to help mid- and higher-handicap golfers avoid digging on steep swings.
The 3-5 irons are cast from Carpenters steel, and the mid- and short irons are cast from softer 17-4 stainless steel.
For players seeking more forgiving irons, the topline of the SpeedBlade is intended to provide confidence.
