Ultimately it will depend on how Woods moves forward with this. If he continues to be aloof and curt with the media, and fails to do a face to face with the public, then I think he will continue to dig his own grave. Issuing statements via his website is certainly not going to take care of the problem, but will only allow this to grow like a festering wound.
Woods may be fantastic on the golf course, but he certainly needs to take a course on PR - post mayhem. The public will forgive, but not if you aren't sincere, which he has yet to show any remorse whatsoever.
What is it exactly that the public wants to hear? If Tiger comes out and says he screwed up and had an extra-marital affair, then what? We all say "okay, don't let it happen again" and move on?
I'm somehow confused by all this and why I should care what Tiger does off the golf course.
Tiger should continue to be private about his private life! He does NOT owe his fans or the public an explanation!
We the public, as much as we care about him and his family, don't need to pry into his private life. Yes, we idolize Tiger, but we do not need to sanctify him. Afterall, he is but HUMAN like all of US - with weaknesses, faults and shortcomings. If he says he failed his family and his values, then we just have to accept that and move on. His transgressions and family issues is between him, his family and God.
I accept Tiger's apologies and will continue to support him. Afterall, the only reason I (and most people) watch golf is because of Tiger. Without Tiger, there will be no thrill in golf - it will just be another sport. Tiger is human and he has sinned, if it all comes down to it. Don't we all? Unless there is anyone among US who has not sinned, please stand up and let us know your name.
The only way to stop the media onslaught is to apologize and keep saying that he's working on the situation, which is a private situation, but that he recognizes that he has let a lot of people down, not the least of which is his family. The Cone of Silence simply won't work. He is a public figure and a public figure has to sometimes talk about that which is profoundly private. You don't remain a public figure, an endorsement icon and keep quiet when everybody else is talking about you.
I agree with lee53, Tiger has in his own way acknowledged his mistake(s) to his family, fans and endorsers, and it's time to forgive and move on. He has to make a 'birdie' put on the last hole to get passed what damage he has done between him and God, Family and Fans like only The World's Number ONE Golfer can do and has come through on the life's golf course in the past. This is a time for his wife, Elin show how much 'grit' she is made of and how much she loves her husband to forgive and mend the tear in their marital membrane. I am a fan and will continue to support Tiger and his family. I will say a prayer that all will work out for them. -- sincerely Miss Kate
One can forgive him on a personal level but on a professional level he is toast. He is no different from a financial planner defrauding you from your money. He was sold to public through marketing campaigns as some great example to us but he ended up being a fraud just like Bernie Medoff. so again on a personal level we as humans should forgive but not forget and on a professional level.... NOT.......There is the difference.
really, do ya' think his wife will let him out of the house... my guess is, he'll play less tourney's and his wife will be with him...that's if she doesn't divorce his ass.
the real sad story is the golf writers abscence of knowledge of woods saga. or that they cover for this louse. maybe more non-golfing fans will show up at events to boo this lying fraud. i hope he never gets a shot off without someone yelling fraud. what a disgrace to good men.
I'm not saying this is appropriate behavior, but I have watched this sad episode unfold as a retired PGA Pro as well as a Biological Anthropology Professor, Like many other "Alpha" Males, Tiger's instinct is to gather a "Tribe." These Guys have a hard time following the conventions of modern life, as they instinctively want to own and protect EVERY woman they choose, and a few thousand years ago, they would have.. Fortunately, anyone who has followed Tiger's career can see that they also possess the biological tools needed to deal with crisis and stress. Tiger will be OK in the aftermath of all this, and the rest of us will forgive him. (Most men secretly wish they were like him.) Even Elin would probably let this slide if we didn't wallow in it every day on CNN. Sadly she is forced to react in a way the fits Western Cultural Ideals, rather than with her own instincts and love for Tiger. Thankfully the Kids are small and not aware of the public feeding frenzy that will most likely destroy this family.
