Player diary: Matt Gilchrest (Part 1)
Saturday, January 26, 2013
Hi, my name is Matt Gilchrest. I am currently a senior at Southlake Carroll Senior High School in Southlake, Texas.
My father introduced me to the game when I was 2 years old and I have been hooked on it ever since. Playing tournaments since age 8, I recently signed a national letter of intent with Auburn University. Last summer, I won three consecutive AJGA events and I am currently ranked No. 24 in the Golfweek/Sagarin junior boys rankings.
This past weekend I played in the AJGA Puerto Rico Junior Open. The winner of the event is presented with a unique and special opportunity to earn a sponsor's invite to the PGA Tour's Puerto Rico Open.
Although I finished T-7 and missed out on the exemption, I had a fantastic week! It was a beautiful course with so many opportunities to stop and enjoy the scenic views and native wildlife. Jorge Garcia won the tournament and the exemption with a 10-under-par, three-day total. He shot 63 the first round and is a very deserving winner.
I had never been to Puerto Rico before and quickly found that it was not like home. During the practice round I was startled when I was charged by a 5-foot long iguana! These little guys seemed to be everywhere especially when you weren't looking for them. The resort was beautiful and the bright blue water made it hard to leave.
My next tournament is the AJGA HP Boys at Carlton Woods in February. It's a beautiful venue that always provides a first-class field. The weather is sure to be colder than Puerto Rico, so I'll be sure to bring my warm hat and cold gloves.
