Puttering around

Paul Casey called an audible just before the Irish Open, switching from a Nike Method 001 putter to a Method 006. It was a good play, considering Casey won the tournament. Meanwhile, Lucas Glover changed from a conventional grip to a counterbalanced grip in his TaylorMade Spider Blade putter. His explanation: He had been watching Justin Rose, who used the counterbalanced Spider Blade to win the U.S. Open.

Couples puts SteelFiber irons shafts in play

Fred Couples notched a familiar second-place finish at the Senior Players. Couples always attracts attention, but the spotlight was even brighter last week because he used a new set of iron shafts.

On Monday, Aerotech SteelFiber iron shafts (a combination of graphite and steel mesh) were air-shipped to Couples. Three days later, they were in his bag. For the tournament, he hit an impressive 90.28 percent of the greens.

There is a Bridgestone connection here as well. On the PGA Tour, Bridgestone staff members Matt Kuchar and Brandt Snedeker use AeroTeach SteelFiber shafts (i95 X). Couples, also a Bridgestone staffer, elected to play heavier shafts (i110 X).

SHORT SHOTS: Park at the U.S. Women’s Open and Casey at the Irish Open used steel iron shafts from Nippon. Park played N.S. Pro 950GH shafts, while Casey had N.S. Pro Prototype Ora shafts. . . . Eight players at the AT&T used Titleist’s new 714 irons, which will not be available at retail until November: Ben Curtis (AP1), Jason Bohn (AP2), Brendon de Jonge (AP2), Jordan Spieth (AP2), Greg Chalmers (CB), Tom Gillis (CB), Ben Kohles (CB), Jimmy Walker (MB)…. Chris Kirk was swinging a new Callaway driver at the AT&T. It was a Razr Fit Xtreme (9.5 degree), replacing the Razr Hawk Prototype driver he has been using all year. The new driver had 13 grams of adjustable weight in the toe and 2 grams in the heel. Amateurs should note that the standard weight configuration is almost the opposite – 13 in the heel, 1 in the toe.
