Alison Lee and Nicole Morales each fired 1-under 69 Wednesday to take the lead after the second round of the AJGA Rolex Tournament of Champions at Lancaster (Pa.) Country Club.
Lee and Morales lead Lilia Vu by one shot. First-round leaders Bethany Wu and Karen Chung, competing in her fifth Rolex Tournament of Champions, shot 75 and 76, respectively, to fall out of the lead.
Morales bogeyed her first two holes but four birdies over her last 16 holes helped her record one of just three under-par rounds on Wednesday.
“I just had to stay patient, take the good with bad,” Morales said.
Lee, the top-ranked player in the Golfweek/Sagarin Junior Rankings, birdied two par 3s (Nos. 6 and 8).
“I stayed patient all day long, getting up and down when I needed to,” Lee said. “Nos. 6 and 8 were really important for me. I wasn’t playing well coming into those holes, but I had a late club change on No. 8 from a 7-wood to a 4-hybrid because I was pumped up.”
Matt Gilchrest, who recently won the FootJoy Invitational, and Theo Humphrey took the lead in the boys division. Gilchrest shot 2-under 68 while Humphrey carded a 67, and both lead Zecheng Dou by one shot at 4 under. Doug Ghim, Scottie Scheffler and Adam Wood are another shot back at 2 under.
Gilchrest, an Auburn signee, holed out for eagle at the par-4 No. 18 hole, hitting a 4-iron from 201 yards.
“I scrambled and struck it well today,” Gilchrest said. “I went five for five on up-and-downs on the front.”
Humphrey, a Vanderbilt commit, made five birdies, including three on the front nine.
“I made very few mistakes today; I had everything working well," Humphrey said. “I’m really excited for the rest of the tournament, I haven’t played well in an invitational before, so winning is the ultimate goal.”
