Player diary: Matt Gilchrest (Part 3)
This past weekend I played the AJGA's Thunderbird International Junior on the Raptor Course at Greyhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
The course lived up to its reputation, providing a challenging experience filled with firm greens, ever-present desert and 100-degree heat.
Aside from tournament play, the AJGA provided many fun events to take the edge off the competition. We played against one another in a variety of “golf” activities. On Saturday night, there was a glow-in-the-dark putting contest, which I was awful at. On Sunday night, there was a competition to hit a lighted wedge shot across a lake into 18 green. Under Armour was very generous to sponsor the event, as well, providing prizes for all of the winners of the contests.
I had an incredibly fun time during the tournament rounds. In the first round I made a hole-in-one on hole No. 8. I followed it up with a chip-in on No. 9 and birdies on Nos. 10 and 11. It was definitely the best streak of golf in my life. Aside from this four-hole stretch that I played in 5 under, the rest of the tournament I played solid shooting rounds of 68-74-71 for a 213 total.
The AJGA provided an unforgettable experience. Thanks to all the sponsors who made this event possible.
