Griffin fires record 61 to take Dogwood lead

Benjamin Griffin talks about his hole-in-one on the par-3 16th on Friday at the Junior Invitational at Sage Valley.

Normally, a first-round 63 would result in a comfortable lead.

But Georgia Tech junior Ollie Schniederjans will have to settle for second after high-schooler Ben Griffin fired a tournament-record 11-under 61 at the Dogwood Invitational on Wednesday in Atlanta.

Griffin had nine birdies and an eagle at the par-72 Druid Hills Golf Club to take the 18-hole lead. Griffin is No. 14 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Junior Rankings and has enjoyed a solid 2013 campaign, finishing second at the AJGA Junior at Innisbrook, third at the Scott Robertson Memorial and sixth at the FootJoy Invitational.

Davin White (Georgia State) and Michael Johnson (Auburn) are three shots back after 8-under 64s.
