College golf is a team game in an individual sport. That's why an individual honor such as the Haskins Award is so important. An NCAA Championship is everyone's goal, but most college players have one eye on professional golf, as well.

Winning the Haskins Award puts players on the same list as Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Ben Crenshaw, Curtis Strange, Justin Leonard, David Duval, Stewart Cink, Jay Haas, Luke Donald, Matt Kuchar, Graeme McDowell and Hunter Mahan.

Here’s our third spring edition of the Haskins Watch List, which takes a look at some of the favorites for this season's award.

Cal’s Michael Kim has established himself as the favorite to win this year’s award, but he has a handful of players nipping at his heels. It's important to note that players not on the list are not excluded from consideration. Anyone can jump into contention with a strong spring. The Haskins Award is eventually decided by voting from fans, media and coaches.

Here's a look at some of the favorites:

• • •

1. Michael Kim, Cal sophomore

Golfweek/Sagarin College Ranking: 1

Golfstat Cup: 1

Last Haskins List rank: 1

Events: 9

Wins: Isleworth Collegiate Invitational, Arizona Intercollegiate, Fresno State Lexus Golf Classic, Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters

Top-10s: 9

Top-5s: 6

Worst finish: T-10, Ping-Golfweek Preview

Last finish: T-1, Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters

The skinny: Two wins in one week, and four in his past five starts, have made Michael Kim the clear front-runner for the Haskins Award.

• • •

2. Patrick Rodgers, Stanford sophomore

photo

Golfweek/Sagarin College Ranking: 7

Golfstat Cup: 12

Events: 8

Last Haskins List rank: 9

Wins: Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational, U.S. Collegiate, Southern Highlands Collegiate Invitational

Top-10s: 4

Top-5s: 3

Worst finish: T-49, Amer Ari Invitational

Last finish: 1st, Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters

The skinny: Rodgers has finished outside the top 10 in half of his starts, but he also has won arguably the top three titles of the regular season: the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Collegiate Invitational, U.S. Collegiate and Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters.

• • •

3. Albin Choi, North Carolina State junior

photo

Golfweek/Sagarin College Ranking: 12

Golfstat Cup: 5

Last Haskins List rank: 5

Events: 7

Wins: Tar Heel Intercollegiate, Warrior Wave Intercollegiate, Puerto Rico Classic, USF Invitational

Top-10s: 6

Top-5s: 5

Worst finish: T-20, Rod Myers Invitational

Last finish: Won, USF Invitational

The skinny: That’s three straight wins for Choi, whose stock continues to rise. He’s trying to follow in the footsteps of Matt Hill, a fellow Canadian and North Carolina State player who won the Haskins in 2009 after an incredible close to the spring season that included winning his conference and regional titles before claiming the NCAA Championship.

• • •

4. Joel Stalter, Cal junior

photo

Golfweek/Sagarin College Ranking: 2

Golfstat Cup: 3

Last Haskins List rank: 3

Events: 7

Wins: Arizona Intercollegiate; John Burns Intercollegiate

Top-10s: 5

Top-5s: 3

Worst finish: T-40, Isleworth Collegiate Invitational

Last finish: T-11, Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters

The skinny: Stalter has one finish outside of the top 11. The only problem? He has to pass teammate Michael Kim before he can be considered a favorite.

• • •

5. Brandon Stone, Texas freshman

photo

Golfweek/Sagarin College Ranking: 3

Golfstat Cup: 6

Last Haskins List rank: 2

Events: 6

Wins: Carpet Capital Collegiate; Bayou City Collegiate

Top-10s: 3

Top-5s: 3

Worst finish: T-36, Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters

Last finish: T-36, Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters

The skinny: Stone took a step backwards by finishing 36th at Southern Highlands after winning the Bayou City Collegiate. His Southern Highlands showing was the worst among the top candidates.

• • •

6. Daniel Berger, Florida State sophomore

photo

Golfweek/Sagarin College Ranking: 5

Golfstat Cup: 10

Last Haskins List rank: 10

Events: 5

Wins: Gator Invitational

Top-10s: 4

Top-5s: 4

Worst finish: T-16, Ping-Golfweek Preview

Last finish: T-2, USF Invitational

The skinny: He’s finished no worse than fifth in his past four starts, including a win and two runners-up.

• • •

7. Julien Brun, TCU sophomore

photo

Golfweek/Sagarin College Ranking: 4

Golfstat Cup: 2

Last Haskins List rank: 6

Events: 6

Wins: Carmel Cup; Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate

Top-10s: 5

Top-5s: 3

Worst finish: T-21, Isleworth Collegiate Invitational

Last finish: T-8, San Diego Classic

The skinny: Though it’s another top-10, a T-8 against a mid-level field at the San Diego Intercollegiate does not help his candidacy.

• • •

8. Cheng-Tsung Pan, Washington sophomore

photo

Golfweek/Sagarin College Ranking: 8

Golfstat Cup: 11

Last Haskins List rank: 4

Events: 7

Wins: Kikkor Golf Husky Invitational

Top-10s: 6

Top-5s: 4

Worst finish: T-39, Bandon Dunes Championship

Last finish: 6th, The Prestige

The skinny: Pan’s showing at Bandon Dunes was his worst of the year, ending his streak of six consecutive top-10s to start the season. He was the front-runner after the fall season after not finishing outside the top 3 in four starts, but he hasn’t finished better than sixth in the spring.

• • •

9. Jace Long, Missouri senior

photo

Golfweek/Sagarin College Ranking: 20

Golfstat Cup: 4

Last Haskins List rank: 8

Events: 8

Wins: Turning Stone Intercollegiate; Golfweek Conference Challenge; Champs/Patriot Intercollegiate; Snowman Getaway Classic

Top-10s: 6

Top-5s: 4

Worst finish: T-20, San Diego Classic

Last finish: T-20, San Diego Classic

The skinny: Long’s T-20 at the San Diego Classic was his worst finish of the year and his first one outside the top 11. His strength of schedule hurts his candidacy.

• • •

10. James Erkenbeck, New Mexico senior

photo

Golfweek/Sagarin College Ranking: 10

Golfstat Cup: 13

Last Haskins List rank: NR

Events: 8

Top-10s: 5

Top-5s: 3

Worst finish: T-30, Ping-Golfweek Preview

Last finish: T-1, Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters

The skinny: Erkenbeck jumps on this list after sharing the title at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters, which features arguably the strongest regular-season field of the year. He also finished second at Isleworth.
