Barco, Wold lead after Round 1 at Thunderbird
Saturday, May 25, 2013
Luis Fernando Barco of Peru and Marthe Wold of Norway lead the boys and girls divisions, respectively, at the Thunderbird International Junior at Grayhawk Golf Club.
Barco, a senior at Colegio Santa Maria Marianistas, shot a 6-under 66. His round included eight birdies and two bogeys. Barco is playing in his first AJGA event.
Two shots back at 4-under are Jorge Garcia and Matt Gilchrest. Garcia won the AJGA Puerto Rico Open in February and was granted an exemption into the PGA Tour’s Puerto Rico Open. Gilchrest made an ace on the par-3 8th on Saturday.
Wold, who will graduate in 2014, finished the day at 4-under 68 on the 6,342-yard Raptor Course. She had a stretch of holes on Nos. 14-18 where she went birdie-birdie-birdie-bogey-birdie. No. 17 played as the toughest hole in the first-round. Last year, Wold finished 29th at Thunderbird’s.
In pursuit of Wold is Karen Chung and Nicole Morales. Chung and Morales shot 2-under 70. Chung is the 2011 Thunderbird champ, while Morales is ranked No. 1 in the class of 2014 Golfweek/Sagarin Junior Rankings.
