SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. – It must be nice to be on the GB&I Walker Cup Team.
The team first met last Friday in New Jersey for practice rounds at two of the most prestigious clubs in the U.S.: Pine Valley Golf Club and Bayonne Golf Club.
That was Rhys Pugh’s favorite part so far during the team's week-long excursion. Pugh is the only returner for GB&I this week at the National Golf Links of America.
From early-week golf, the team made its way to the Big Apple, where Sunday it took a boat ride past the Statue of Liberty.
That evening, both teams went to the U.S. Open Tennis Championship in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. They watched Roger Federer, advance to the fourth round of the year’s last grand slam.
Monday, continuing its tour through New York City, the team took in the New York Yankees game versus the Baltimore Orioles.
“That was the first time I’ve ever been to a baseball game, so it was different,” Gavin Moynihan said. Moynihan, 18, has started his freshman year at Alabama.
That afternoon they went to the top of the Empire State Building, and that evening they walked through Times Square.
The team finally huddled at the National Golf Links of America on Tuesday.
“It’s beautiful,” Callum Shinkwin added.
Indeed it is.
