The U.S. team can point to many reasons it won the 44th Walker Cup, but one of those has to be how it played the par-5 18th hole.

With the cup in doubt, the matches reached the last hole eight times. In four of those, the U.S. won the last hole while GB&I won twice.

The U.S. gained an important half point there in Saturday-morning foursomes to avoid trailing 3 and 1 early. In Saturday singles, Jordan Niebruggge picked up an important point extending the U.S. dominance that afternoon.

Then Homa and Michael Kim stole a point by carding a par in the Sunday-morning foursomes, making a GB&I comeback all the more difficult.

“We didn’t want to lose momentum and we gained a little bit,” Homa said after the victory on Sunday morning.

In 2011 at Royal Aberdeen, the matches only got to the final hole six times – and just twice in the first three sessions.
