Hello!

How’s everyone’s day? I know I’ve been pretty busy lately since school started. Being a student-athlete isn’t as easy as it seems, especially if you’re a junior golfer. We have to travel during the school year, and we have to keep up with school at the same time. If we don’t keep up the grades, it won’t be an easy ride in high school.

A typical day for me would consist of school, practice and sometimes workouts. I get out of school at 12:15 p.m. every day so that I have more time to practice. Usually, I would go home, eat lunch, take a nap and then go straight to the course from 4 to 7 p.m. There’s something funny about my practices: I practice at four different courses, but not all in one day. I practice my swing at one course, my putting at another, chipping at another and I use the last one for on-course practice. You are probably thinking that I’m crazy, but it’s true. I try to finish most of my homework at school so that I get more time to practice golf and to study for the SAT. Junior year is the hardest year of all in high school, so I tried to get easier classes in order to concentrate more on the SAT. Since I traveled the whole summer, I couldn’t take SAT classes, so I’m currently studying by myself at home. I’m aiming for a 4.0 GPA this year, and at least an 1800 on the SAT, so wish me luck!

There’s one more thing that I have to squeeze into my day: workouts. To tell you the truth, I don’t work out often like some other girls, but I’m starting to do it every other day now. I realized how important it was when the other girls were catching up on me on my drives. I started this new workout, and it’s pretty tiring for a 15-minute jump rope workout. Phew! And after that, I would do lots of abs workouts to help the core muscles since they’re pretty important in the golf swing. Once I found out that everyone was starting to work out, I knew I had to start. It’s good to start soon because in college, I know that I’ll be working out a lot at UCLA.

Balancing school, golf and workouts is not easy. As student-athletes, we have to miss school, catch up on homework, then make up tests that we missed. Sometimes when I’m traveling to tournaments, I have to sacrifice going to social events in order to catch up on some homework that I missed or on a book that I have to finish that week. Sacrifices are definitely made when you’re trying to balance those three components of being a student-athlete, but once you have them balanced, you’re golden.

Many don’t realize how hard we junior golfers work to be the golfers that we are today. Some say that we don’t even have to try once we commit to a college when actually, we have to try even harder than before. We have to maintain a good GPA, and get a good score on the SATs. We have made so many sacrifices and have dedicated hours to the game of golf, and many don’t realize it, so I’m here to prove that we do work hard, we do have to try harder in school, and that it isn’t easy.
