Chip Lutz on early roll at USGA Senior Amateur

Chip Lutz

Chip Lutz already owns two British Senior Open Amateur and two Canadian Senior Amateur titles, winning the international events in 2011 and 2012 and narrowly missing three-peats this year. Now he is playing very much like he wants one in his own country.

After winning stroke-play qualifying by seven shots Sunday at the USGA Senior Amateur with a 6-under 138 -- his first medalist honor in a U.S. Golf Association championship -- Lutz's roll continued in the first round of match play Monday at Wade Hampton Golf Club in Cashiers, N.C. The Reading, Pa., native defeated Mike Peck of Irving, Texas, 4 and 3, to advance to today's Round of 32, where he will face another Pennsylvania golfer, Paul Schlachter of Pittsburgh.

“I got off to a really great start,” said Lutz, who advanced to the semifinals of the USGA Senior Amateur in 2010 and '11 but has never won the event. “I made three birdies on my first four holes. That got the juices flowing.”

Because half of the field had to complete the second round of qualifying Monday morning, only 23 of 32 first-round matches were completed after play was suspended due to darkness at 7:22 p.m. The first round resumed at 7:40 a.m. Tuesday, with the second round of match play starting at 8 a.m.

Defending champion Paul Simson, 62, of Raleigh, N.C., returned to the course Tuesday morning and eliminated Tom Schultz, 3 and 2

Two other past Senior Amateur champions weren’t so fortunate. John Long, of Centreville, Va., eliminated 2008 Senior Amateur champion Buddy Marucci, 3 and 1, and Brady Exber, of Las Vegas, needed 19 holes to edge 2009 champion Vinny Giles, at age 70 the oldest player to make match play.

Giles won holes 16 and 17 to square the match before Exber birdied the first extra hole, the par-5 first, for the victory.

Another first-round highlight was a late comeback by Patrick Duncan, of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. Down two with two to play, Duncan birdied holes 17, 18 and 19 to defeat Casey Boyns, a longtime caddie at Pebble Beach Golf Links.
