Thomas, Stone 2 shots back at Alfred Dunhill Links
Former college standouts Justin Thomas and Brandon Stone each carded 6-under 66s Thursday and are tied for 11th after the first round of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland.
Thomas, who played two seasons at Alabama before turning pro after the Walker Cup earlier this month, made eight birdies and two bogeys on the Old Course at St. Andrews, which is one of three courses being played this week.
This is the first start for Thomas as a pro and his first start on the European Tour. He's made two of four cuts in his career on the PGA Tour, including a T-30 finish at the Travelers Championship in June.
Stone, who turned pro shortly after finishing his freshman season at Texas, opened with a bogey on the opening hole at Kingsbarns before going birdie-eagle on the next two holes. He added four more birdies.
The South African native has made three cuts in seven previous starts on the European Tour since turning pro, including last week at the Kazakhstan Open. His best finish as a pro is a T-10 showing at the BMW International Open in June.
