The finishing holes at The Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tenn., proved to be damaging for all but one.
M.J. Maguire won the 108th Southern Amateur Championship on Saturday with a 4-under 284 total to defeat Australian Geoff Drakeford and Victor Perez of Albuquerque, N.M., by three shots.
Maguire, who plays at North Florida, was five shots back of 54-hole leader Beau Hossler entering the day, but was one of five players to shoot under par in the final round. Maguire capped off his victory with a 1-under 71.
Hossler squandered his two-shot lead early in the final round by shooting a 10-over 46 on the front nine at the 7,155-yard course. The Mission Viejo, Calif., native would go on to shoot 8-over 80, but still finish inside the top five (T-4).
For a moment in the final round, rising Virginia Tech senior Trevor Cone held the lead. Going 7 over on his last six holes, however, Cone fell into a tie for fourth with a final round 78.
Drakeford was also at the top of the leaderboard for a quick second before making an 8 on the 175-yard par-3 16th. He finished with a 75.
Scott Vincent (T-4), Lee McCoy (seventh), Robby Shelton (T-8), Michael Cromie (T-12) were the other four players to shoot under par on Sunday where the scoring average was 76.63.
