Dechambeau leads Western Amateur after morning 18

CHICAGO – The Western Amateur has a new leader in the clubhouse after the third round of stroke play Thursday.
Rising SMU junior Bryson Dechambeau sits atop the leaderboard after a 4-under 67 in the third round of the 112th championship.
Dechambeau birdied two of his final three holes for a one-shot lead over Joshua Munn of New Zealand. Munn shot a 4-under 67 in the morning 18 to finish at 10-under 203 total on the par-71 7,016-yard The Beverly Country Club.
The afternoon 18 holes are underway to determine the top 16 players for match play, which begins Friday morning.
36-hole leader Doug Ghim finished tied for third after a 2-over 72. Also in third are Zecheng ‘Marty’ Dou (68) and Australian Taylor Macdonald after the lowest score of the morning – 6-under 65.
Other notes from the first 18 at the Western Amateur:
• There are four Australians left in the field – Macdonald (65), Geoff Drakeford (70), Cory Crawford (67) and Lucas Herbert (69). All four fired under-par rounds in the third round of stroke play at the Western Amateur. There were 12 Aussies to start the tournament Tuesday.
• Four Texas Longhorns remain in the field on Thursday: Ghim (73), Beau Hossler (68), Scottie Scheffler (70) and Gavin Hall (73). Three of four are in position to advance to match play, Hall on the outside looking in at T-41 to start the fourth round.
• The 245-yard par-3 third is playing as the most difficult hole of the tournament through three rounds.
